Has anyone figured out why cats like to lie down in their litter boxes? This is twice I've caught Puddles lying in her box. Usually, after I've cleaned it. She digs around in it and goes 'sploot'.

Or do I just have a weird cat? LOL!

Splooting is often a means that animals use to keep cool during hot weather.

Maybe she's doing it because she feels too warm?
It HAS been quite warm here. In the low 30'sºC (low 90's ºF) and high humidity. Even with the AC going, it's quite warm in the apartment. Poor kitten! I'm going to see if I can brush her, too, and see if she can cool down with less fur bothering her...

My boy does the same. Before I changed his clay litter to Tofu Cat Litter, he rolls a few times a day in the litterbox. Now he rolls much less like after the change of litter.

Cats like to roll in the litterbox especially if the litter is rough like sand and cats like to roll because it helps them sort of clean their fur of certain debris and also the litter is cool and they like it. If you pay attention to strays and feral cats, they like to roll on the sand and on concrete floor.
Also some cats seek security in litterboxes as they feel safe within the confined area.

As long as your cat is not doing it all the time and looks like she's staying in it for a long time and looks unwell as the litterbox is a quiet place to be, then it's time to have your cat check by the vet, otherwise, it's just them, no worries.

If you watch the video, it says that some animals might sploot when they are sick or don't feel well, so check up on that if you think your cat isn't feeling up to snuff. :)
Thanks! I'm going to watch her. :D. Never know when something might happen

Just watch that is she trying hard to pee? Sometimes if they are trying hard to pee (UTI suspicion) they may dig around and cry and lay down in the litterbox, which I hope it's not the case for Puddles or other illness like constipation and other stuffs.

I have a cat who sploots and gives herself dust baths. LUCKILY not in her litter box though. Still gets really dirty. I've seen a fair amount of cats who hang out in their litter box. Figured it was just a comforting confined space. Guess some cats don't mind smelling a little... litter boxy?

Hi there!She is so cute

Well, you've only recently adopted Puddles and its not even been 30 days since she's in her new home, she has to establish the house as her territory and that's what she is doing at this point ( as long as there's no underlying heath issues and she's recently been to the Vet ,right?)

So like I said,as long as she's showing no signs of being unwell as others have mentioned then its probably just part of her establishing territory, there's Winter too- so she's probably feeling very safe and confident in her own scent....

Many cats new to a home do this ,especially when there are resident pets- she's in Winters territory and in her litter box " it's hers only"....she should have another litter box too,if thats the only one they sometimes guard it a little from other pets .... she has no idea Winter doesn't use a litter box- lol

That's exactly right- their own scent is comforting to them

Could be she needs another box so there's no competition for her box, even though Winter is a dog❤

I'll consider a second litter box, then. If it'll make her happier, I don't see why I couldn't do it!

Also just emailed the local mobile vet about an appointment with Puddles. Hope to hear from them in the next day or so :)

She looks quite content in your photos, she's just settling in,feeling things out and getting comfortable as she establishes her new territory.... it's all very new to her and unfamiliar still- it takes a little time to feel, safe and secure in a new environment so it's certainly not an unusual thing for a new addition to the family

Keep us posted on her Vet visit❤I think she's doing great( so is Winter, very sweet dog)
