Why does my cat have these scabs on his neck?

My cat is 14 years old and he has these scabs in his neck and in some other spots but mostly his neck and it's causing hair loss. What could be a cause?

He should see a vet. That looks very uncomfortable.

My cat recently went through this...you change food? His was due to what was thought heat rash/dry skin caused by weather change...but then I realized it was a food allergy causing it because it just got worse. Definitely take your cat to the vet to get some antibiotics to help cease any bacterial infections that could happen AS it did in my cat's case. He is alright but it took a while to detect.
