Why do people not like black cats?

I happen to know someone who notes the companionship of two black cats as an example of "birds of a feather flock together".

Maybe that's why.

Personally, I'm a huge black cat fan. They're gorgeous.

This is Max. He has been gone to Rainbow Bridge since 2005. He was fourteen years old. and he was the love of my life. He was a black and white tuxedo and was the smartest cat I ever knew. He took showers with me, walked on the treadmill with me, and did many things that cats just don't do. I miss him. Black cats may very well be my favorite.

I have nothing against black cats. I just prefer orange ones. I think black and orange cats are beautiful.

My guess is there are so many colorful and beautiful cats to choose from that a black cat looks so, well, plain.  Black kittens are almost always the last to get chosen yet they are some of the sweetest we have at our shelter.  I am fostering 4 right now that are just the most precious things ever.  As a matter of fact, all the black kittens I have fostered have been over the top affectionate.

Sometimes people are just ignorant - meaning they ignore the obvious - that they are beautiful and wonderful in so many ways.

I've heard the same thing about black cats being hard to adopt

out.  It's all in the human mind of the rumors they hear of black

cats being bad luck especially if one crosses in front of you.

I personally have a black Tuxedo (maine coon) that I rescued

from the neighborhood.  Nice quiet, calm, laid back kitty.

Thanks for sharing and hope this misconception can get better

over time.

This very question has nagged me for a long time now.....I simply shake my head for lack of understanding.  I just don't get it and it makes

no sense to me.  A better question would be "How can people NOT like black cats?".....They are awesome.  Just like every other color cat.

Because CATS are AWESOME.  Big cats, little cats, fat cats, skinny cats, stray cats, purebred cats, alley cats, lap cats, scaredy cats, long-haired or short-haired, fur-less cats, old cats, young cats, grumpy cats, timid cats, friendly cats.....ALL cats.

I have four cats (or they have me) and they are not prejudiced that I am blonde and white.  They don't care what color I am.

I am extremely good to them and that is all they see.  Why do we as humans care so much about color?

I adopted my little black girl a year ago from the shelter BECAUSE she is BLACK.  I already have 2 gray cats and one brown tabby.

I did not pick them for their color but because they all were rescues and needed me.  They were the un-adoptable ones....one was sick,

one was so shy he hid from everyone, one was fat....and one was black.   I was told by the shelter that she had been there the longest.

To me, they are the most beautiful cats in the world.  I will admit that I would like to have a cat of every color just because cats are so

diverse and beautiful.  But I have never chosen (or not chosen) a cat based upon it's color.  I love them all.

I volunteer as a cat cuddler in my local shelter and I actually heard a couple walking round saying they don't want a black cat because they're too "common" and if it were to get lost, then they'd never be able to know if it was theirs or not. A bit of a silly reason to not want a black cat in my opinion. I socialise a group of 4 black kittens and apart from having different coloured eyes, they've all got such different personalities! If you can't tell if your cat is yours or not then you need to spend more time with it!

Nice post FernEden:  I just learned something new.

I didn't know there was such a thing as a cat cuddler.

All cats are special even the homeless, strays that

owners abandon, ferals.  My Special Tuxedo is a

black with white chest and bits of white on his nose.

This was a neighborhood rescue who wasn't neutered,

flea infested, worms.  Brought him back to health &

has health insurance.

I did not know black cats are good luck in England I knew they are good luck in Japan. I volunteer at an adoption center at Petsmart. We always have black cats I am going to start promoting them as good luck and the adopter will be a cool owner in tune with international cat owners. I have to work on the wording, though

Black cats are associated with evil magic and witches and bad luck.  Wait wait...o.o is this stigma like the "race card" thing?  Maybe it's those glowing yellow or green eyes that spook people out.

I think it's the black hair on everything.  People dumb enough to dislike black cats are probably dumb enough to buy white carpeting and white upholstered furniture - and then hold their breath for the rest of their Lives, praying that no single speck of dust falls on their precious possessions.

Such ignorance should never have a dog or cat in their care.  They would have a pet simply because of its appearance, likened to a purse or leather wallet or article of clothing.  If I were the pet store clerk, I would lead him/her over to the snakes so they could choose from a palette of vibrant colors.
