Nikko and Tippi both came from breeders. They're both persians with Nikko being a dollface persian. I got Nikko first, he turned two in June and Tippi will be a year old in September. It wasn't love at first sight with the two of them, the introduction process was rather slow, but now they're the best of friends. Where you find one, you often find the other.

Did they come from a breeder? A shelter? A former stray or feral? A rescue?

As for mine, Katara, my British longhair was brought home through an adoption. She was a failed breeder who had two litters of kittens and abandoned both of them so the breeder didn't have any use for her anymore so she came home with me and was immediately spayed. She's a complete doll.

Biscuit, my ragdoll, also came home through an adoption. He has strabismus which means he's slightly cross eyed. It's barely noticeable and sometimes you can't tell at all and it doesn't affect his quality of life. Since he wasn't "perfect" (he is to me!) I only had to pay a small adoption fee to bring him home.

Along with my two indoor kitties, I have two strays who I claim as my own. Their names are Louis and Leo. I TNRed them a year ago and they've really tamed down since then. I have been wanting to bring them in and make them indoor cats to give them a better life, but I just haven't taken the plunge yet.

Here's my indoor and outdoor cats checking each other out.

So tell me, what's the story of how you got your furbabies?
I love that last pic. It looks like a couple of street-wise kids asking the posh kids out for a fight.
You have some real cuties.

LOL! Me too! I love that 3rd picture. Or it could be some neighborhood cats encouraging to come with them and ransack somebody's kitchen, which the two refused. A photo can show a thousand stories.

I got Krista from the shelter. In the line of cats and kittens in cages, she looked like the only one that wanted to leave. The others looked resigned to their fates.

She was two years old already. I have no idea what her history was. Whoever did her socialization though did a fantastic job. She’s confident, interactive, and so affectionate.

My cat, Kayli, came from a breeder. I also have my Mom's two cats living with me. The british shorthair is named Rhana and the other is named Snoetje. Both were rescues. They were only supposed to be here for a couple of months while my Mom got her finances together but they've been here over a year. I don't know if she's ever coming to get them and if she doesn't that's fine with me. They will have a home here.

Toffee and Fudge came from the local rescue shelter. They had been rescued from an abandoned building that had served as a colony to 72+ cats (they were still rescuing cats and kittens from the colony when they rescued the boys). They were semi-feral when we first adopted them, though I managed to socialise them and they're now lap cats. They're still scared of other people and loud/sudden noises, but otherwise they're very happy and confident.

Apart from the cats bought from breeders there is a recurring theme here.
Who chose who.
Seems the cats made the choice to own you and we didn't get a say in it..lol
Even with Blue his owner got a surprise when he flopped at my feet and stayed close to me when we first met.
I am sure cats are con artists.
My first cat chose me as a kitten. She took a shine to the summer boarder who was allergic to her and also didn’t have a room of his own just yet. We worked out an agreement that night she came into the house. I wouldn’t put her some place she couldn’t get down from if she wouldn’t sleep on my face. She took my hip. It took me two miserable weeks to get over my allergy and it took my friend a few more years for him to move to a “no pets” apartment for her to come live with me permanently.

Now my second and current cat, she definitely chose me. Just look at that face and those eyes. She dialed it up to 11 and won me over with her first “wassup?” trill to me.

Starbuck was tossed out a car window on to a friend's mother's property. Thankfully her mom was walking her dog and found her right away. This happened when she was 4 weeks old. The dog wanted to eat her so mom could not keep her for her own safety. Mom brought her to my friend's house thinking another family member that lost their cat to health issues would adopt her. This person was not ready and Starbuck looked too much like the cat she had lost. My friend had two adult cats. One of the cats acted like he wanted to kill the kitten so she was stuck living in their powder room. We went over to meet the kitten and she immediately climbed all over my hubby. We decided to adopt her and she got a long with my adult male cats quickly. She was 6 weeks old when we adopted her and one of my boys took on the mommy role to teach her manners and boundaries. I think an abandoned abused adult cat that I adopted that had passed away sent Starbuck to us. We were not looking to adopt another fur baby at this time.

Sonny was adopted from a friend who was doing private rescue on her own. I helped socialize him when he was a baby. I fell in love with him but one of my cats was having health issues so it was not the time to adopt another baby. Sonny was adopted. He was returned after the couple that adopted him got a divorce. One of my boys had just passed away when he was returned to her. My friend knew how much I had bonded to him when he was a baby. She asked us if we wanted to adopt him. I was not completely sure I was ready yet. She offered to keep him for a while to give me time to decide what I wanted to do. We decided to adopt him. Since he was already up to date on vaccines and chipped she gave him to us for free. She did take him to the vet for a check-up when he was returned to her before we adopted him. This friend is also my cat sitter so she still gets to see Sonny. I did not know until years later that her adoption contracts had a clause that she would help with vet care if the cat became sick and the owner was unable to afford care. Sonny got sick when our finances were tight. Even though we never did an official contract she paid for his care and refused to let me give her any money for it. Sonny was adopted in Claude's memory after he was put to sleep from a stroke.

Apollo was adopted from a local rescue as an older kitten for my remaining senior Tegato to hang out with. Sonny was very independent when we first adopted him. Apollo became Tegato's buddy but also bonded with Sonny very well. His bond with Sonny got stronger when Tegato also had to be put to sleep due to a stroke. Claude and Tegato were brother's.

Casey was adopted from the same rescue as Apollo but a different location. He is our black cat. All our other cats are tabby's He was sitting in a cage by himself crying after his siblings had been adopted. My hubby stopped at his cage to give him attention. He started crying again when we walked away to get cat food. Hubby went to visit him again and then went to get cat litter. The cashier on duty was also a volunteer for the rescue. We were the only customers left close to closing time. She took Casey out of his cage and up front with her. Hubby went to put the bag of cat food down and he ran up hubby's arm and perched on his shoulder. Hubby had been adopted. We had to buy a new carrier since we did not bring one with us to pick-up cat food and litter. We were given a discount since was had adopted from the rescue before. We were also able to take Casey home with us right away since we had already been approved before. Casey was 7 weeks old and a people cat. As an adult he still loves to meet new people. Him and Apollo bonded quickly and became play mates. Everyone gets along with Casey.

I woke up to a call from a friend who found a shivering and crying abandoned kitten. His daughter is severely allergic to cats so there's no way he could keep it. He asked me if I'd take it in and I said yes so bright and early this morning he dropped it off. I'm guessing the kitten is 3ish weeks old and I'm sure it would still be nursing from it's mother, so I'm going to go out and get some kitten milk replacer and a bottle or syringe. I set the kitten up in my guest bedroom and placed it in a box with a blanket and a heating pad under one side and I think it'll be fine until I get back from the store. I'll be taking her to vet as soon as I can get an appointment to make sure she's healthy. What a surprise! I went to bed with one cat and woke up with two. She sure is cute though. Now I have to come up with a name for her because right now I keep calling her Squeaks.

Here's a picture of her on the couch in my guest bedroom (it's more of a den) where I took a quick pic as I got things together.

You might also want to see if she'll eat "kitten glop":

Scroll down until you see "KITTEN GLOP". There are some other recipes that might also be helpful. She is adorable!!! *Usually, cats will let you know their names in time.*

We got all three of my new kitties from our local shelter.
Bynx (the black one) was rescued (by the shelter) as a kitten adopted out by a family, but then ran away (yeah right) just to be picked up again (by the shelter), and when they contacted the previous owners they said they didn't want him back because he was aggressive - NOT A CHANCE IN H**L they were telling the truth, unless he was being treated badly, he's the best cat! He's 2 years old now.
Chester (cream and white tabby) came from a litter of kittens rescued by the shelter from a farm (I think). He's just over a year old now. Him and Bynx are the best of friends and play together all the time. He is such a good natured cat and is so sweet with our next little girl.
Lily (orange tabby) is our timid little girl. She was rescued (again by the shelter) I think from a hoarding house. She was pregnant and gave birth to a litter in the shelter. She was, I'm told, a very good momma (which you can tell from the way she is with us and the 2 boys). She has blossomed in our care and is the sweetest thing ever. She is about 2 and a half now.

Bynx is on top, Lily in the middle and Chester on the bottom.

Just wanted to give HUGE props to everyone who has RESCUED/ADOPTED their cat(s). *Until there are none (needing loving permanent homes), ADOPT one.*

I agree that rescue is vitally important and it serves the purpose of the majority of people. However without breeders the breeds would fade away. It is NOT the breeders who are causing the many shelter cats - it is irresponsible people who do not have their cats spayed and neutered. I feel the focus should be on getting the spaying and neutering done instead of destroying the pedigreed cats. Breeders have a niche clientele - those who want specific breed characteristics, and want to know the genetic health of the cat. Most breeders and cat clubs I know work with rescues and support them.

My first cat Gypsy was found out at a hunting shack during bird season, the hunters wives brought her in the second week once they realized she was starving to death. My mom cat sat for their neighbors and we took her in, I was 14 at the time so she was "my kitty" and she passed away a few years ago when I was 30. She was spayed/front declawed and several years old so definitely pre-owned by someone.

Newt, my Highlander was surrendered to a rescue I work with because the owners were moving, she was 3 at the time and is 5 now.

Scully, my Bengal was being rehomed on facebook. She'd been purchased for breeding but I think they got over their head (early gen, she's a handful) and decided it wasn't worth the hassle. She was about 7 months old and is almost 2 now.

My sentiments exactly! I am not bad for buying my pure-breed cats from breeders. I know the entire health history of the parents on back. Plus, a good breeder will have such adorable cats due to all the hands on they get right from birth. This is why I have NEVER had a cat the was hard to comb or bathe.

I just have always liked the Persian & Himalayan breeds. We always had the American shorthair "mutts" when I was growing up. We had Cats, Dogs, Rabbits, my sisters had mice and hamsters, and we had chickens.

I love all cats and dogs (and they seem to love me too). I have musician friends who have dogs and I get mobbed by the dogs when I visit. But, I have chosen to have high end cats.

I would NEVER support "destroying the pedigreed cats" or ANY cat. But I do strongly and vehemently advocate for spay/neuter and adopting for life, every cat and kitten in need out there on the streets and in the shelters.

This reminds me of how one of my friend's found a young kitten. Her hubby was working at a construction project and went into the alley to smoke. A tiny gray fluff ball was sitting in the middle of the alley crying his head off. Her hubby picked up the kitten and got his boss to let him take an early lunch to take the kitten home. My friend is a teacher and this happened when she was off work during the summer. She sent me a picture of the kitten and I advised her to take the kitten to the vet immediately because it was so tiny. He was two weeks old and required around the clock care. My friend's dad who was retired took care of the kitten during the day so she could get some sleep. He loved car rides so the kitten would visit her dad when they could not be home for feedings. He also had issues pooping because his poop hole was too small and he had to have surgery to fix it. His knick name was "plasma tv" because of the expensive vet bills he rang up as a baby. His really name was Smokey. He turned into a very loving, happy and healthy adult. He is a senior kitty now. One time she was bringing him home from the vets and he pooped all over himself. She did have any experience bathing cats. She called us for advice and my hubby told me to just have her come to our house and we would show her how to give him a bath. My hubby gave the kitten a bath and I wrapped him in a warm to towel to dry off. We cleaned out a large box and put a towel under a heating pad to keep him warm. I washed his travel towel and helped my friend clean her cat carrier. I made a rice sock for her to use to keep him warm on the trip home. She used one for the vet trip but we decided the old dirty poopy sock was not worth saving. He had a box with a heating pad covered by a towel in half the box at home to keep him warm. He was very happy to be given a bath. He actually fell asleep in the towel while being dried. Smokey was given a pair of brand new socks by us.

The kitties in my signature:

Kitty (Apr - Sep 5, 1999): she came from a pet shop. At that time I had a gerbil and on a day in June I walked into the shop to buy some rodent food for my gerbil. I heard a meow and went to the back of the shop. I saw a couple of kittens in a large cage. That day was my birthday, so I talked to my my wife and we agreed to have her. She was lovely and loved to watch the TV. She was a grey tabby shorthair. She left us after nearly 3 months due to a car accident.

Romeo (May 15, 2000 - Apr 23, 2001) and Lola (May 15, 2000 - March 30, 2017): I found them both in a cardboard box at my workplace. They were 10-12 days old, their mother had abandoned them and someone had put them both in that box, don't know why. I took them home. They were bottle fed and weaned, and they stayed. Romeo was white and ginger, like their mother. Lola was a wonderful tortie. Romeo was killed on the road at night, one month shy of his first birthday. Lola was the true light of my life for the next 17 years, and I still cry everyday when I think of her. She died to an oral SCC.

Tom (? - Sep 13, 2013)
: he showed up in my courtyard June 2011, he was starving, I had never seen a thinner cat before. I gave him some food and he never left since. He was an adult tabby ginger cat, at least 5 years old, according to the vet. He was the kindest and freindliest cat ever. He loved everybody and every animal, dogs, birds, insects. I never saw him hurting any form of life. He was FIV and FeLV when he arrived. He died to FIP.

Leo (Sep 10 - Nov 20, 2014): I found him and her sister along with their mother. They were wandering near my workplace. I trapped them all and took them to the vets. The mother was spayed, the kittens were held at the vet practice to find them a good home. They were about 4 weeks old, and needed lots of vet cares. A month later his sister was adopted, he was alone, so I took him home. He wouldn't grow up, at 2 months of age he was still 1 lb. He had a bilateral kidney dysplasia and his days were numbered. He was put to sleep.

Pallina (May 3, 2001 - August 8, 2018): I found her in my feline colony on January 2nd, 2001. She was a blow-in, she was scared and disoriented. Later on I found out she was coming from another feline colony half a mile away, but the fireworks on New Year's Day had frightened her and she ran to a safer and quieter place. That January was really cold and she just couldn't adapt to the new place, she was rather friendly, I took her home with me, I wanted to give my sweet Lola a company after the death of her brother Romeo. Actually, Lola and Pallina never got along. Pallina died to a liver failure, at night, without me next to her. I will never forgive myself for this!

Right now I have a kitten home, her name is Pesca, Italian for Peach, because she was just as tiny when I found her two weeks ago, among some waste bins, while she was looking for something to eat. She's lovely, quiet, sweet and affectionate. I don't know it yet if I keep her or re-home her. She's a grey tabby shorthair with two nice eyes.
