16yo male cat. Solensia doesn’t seem to be helping enough. Does anyone have any other recommendations?

There are foks on this site that are using both Solensia and Adequan. The latter is also an injection, but does contain a joint supplement too. I will say most of the folks who have done this started out with Adequan and then added Solensia later.

Why are you saying it is not helping? How long have you been giving him Solensia? It took 3 months' worth of injections for me to notice any kind of difference in my cat. Could it be that your cat needs a indifferent kind of pain med added, as opposed to just these that are used for arthritis?

Have you discussed potential alternatives/options with your vet?

Thanks, FO. Jasper has been on the Solensia for quite a while. It just doesn’t seem like it gets him through the month. I’ve inquired about the Adequan too and his vet is considering it. We’re battling another issue too and ruling out some hiccups before we consider starting. He can get Gabapentin to supplement his pain issues as well.

Im wondering about Laser Treatment as well? Heard any pros/cons?

Im not sure how much discomfort is normal and “fair” for an old boy. 💔

Look for a holistic vet that may support not only laser treatments, but other things like acupuncture. I was advised to go that direction when I had to stop Solensia. My cat has other health issues as well, including lymphoma, so I didn't pursue it. I have given her buprenorphine, but not seeing that it has helped much either. Then again, I am talking about a cat who has many more issues than just arthritis. I went the buprenorphine route because I could not get her to take gabapentin in any form.

Also, if you can, you might look into CBD oil.

Hi and welcome to TCS. On the 3rd shot of Solensia, Feeby began to itch a lot. I wasn't sure what the cause was, so we continued with 3 more shots before stopping - for other reasons (her age and not much, if any, in the way of trials on CKD cats in Stages 2+). It wasn't long after that when the itching stopped.

Have you looked into Adequan? It works similarly to Solensia, using different meds, and also contains a joint supplement too. We did not try it with Feeby, due to other issues that came up, so we did give her Buprenorphine for pain.

I've been using Lift by Summit Pet Health. It's a once weekly liquid joint supplement. It helped my Sammy a lot in his final months. I have 3 others on it now for maintenance.

I have not looked into Adequan. Thank you for your reply.

Another warm welcome to TCS and, yes, our cat started having this exact same reaction after his second shot. Plus it wasn't showing any signs of improvement whatsoever. :nono: When it was time for his third injection we discussed it in detail with our vet and she agreed not to give it to him. She also told us there had been other clients whose cats had this reaction.

If you read my thread I am having major problems. I did notice that my cat has been scratching her ears since the injection.

Thank you! What did you do after stopping the injection. If anything has it helped?

Honestly, he had problems in his spine before we adopted him almost 9 years ago but they were not as noticeable and managed without meds at that time. Fast forward to early this year, several months after the second Solensia injection he was diagnosed with Stage 2 kidney disease and unfortunately passed away from end stage kidney disease last month. 😿
(Note: the Solensia did not cause his kidney disease.)
