I'm betting that Michele's sister is glad that she no longer lives in Florida about now. For 20-some years, she lived in the Tampa Bay area but moved back to WNY in '97. Snow can be shoveled, but water? Not so much.

Thinking about a friend of mine and my cousin's son & family. Cousin's son lives in Tampa. They had to evacuate to a few miles more inland-- in laws..

My friend lives in Bradenton-- it is supposed to be a direct hit!! She lives in a 6th floor condo, has hurricane shutters, and windows. Her car is out in the open.. She told a friend that she would stay with her during the hurricane--- not a good idea in my opinion. Her friend lives a mile away, in a townhouse!! Supposedly hurricane windows, but it is ground level!! My friend's car will be in a garage--- but.....

I think my friend should have stayed at her place, having her friend come over. But......

I do not want to keep bugging her with texts, because who knows when the power will go out. I expect it to.. Told her to cook some food now, that can be kept at room temp.. Get the peanut butter, popcorn popped, keep phones and laptop charged, have flashlights by their side. I do not know what else to tell them, without getting them even more anxious..

Personally, I have a lot of emergency stuff in here. I had to when I took care of my dad, and it just stuck.
LED small lanterns, flashlights, a battery powered with hand crank emergency radio.. a real old fashioned corded Bell Telephone, snacks, etc. I take stock each winter due to blizzards.

Wishing everyone in Florida a good outcome from this catastrophic storm..

Hope everything's OK! I remember when houson was supposed to have a level 4 hurricane. Everyone bought tons of water. I stayed at my parents house because its not ground flat and my 3 cats. And it never happened. We were all very anxious!

No, but they had a real doozy back in March of 1964 that was more powerful than the 1906 San Francisco quake.
There was one in Alaska.. can't remember where that drained a lake! Happened in the early 1900's.

ETA: I did some looking up and it seems it was the 1964 earthquake. a 9.2!

That quake caused other events such as landslides which created local tsunamis and the violent shaking and plates shifting also burst pipes .The tsunamis caused most of the deaths of those victims .....spilled oil caught fire and the seismic waves were coming ashore ablaze

A vertical fault extending around 120 miles deep was blamed back then but that was disproved l
when in fact it was discovered and understood that there are subduction " zones" that cause tremendous earthquakes

All this helps in building and zoning BUT does nothing to predict an event- the 64 Quake came suddenly without warning dinnertime on that horrific day and in it itself lasted only 4 minutes..... imagine that?

I looked that '64 quake up to refresh my memory, and it said that in one place, the ground level rose 85 feet, while in other places it sank several feet. I remember the news reports at the time, and I believe that Life magazine did a photo article on it.

You're probably right- Life was quite the Mag back then,In NYC I don't ever remember a waiting room in any office without Life Magazines in it and every person's home in my family's circle of friends-Imo it was photo journalism at its finest,a part of American culture, whatever happened to it?Didn't Time own it?

What's on my mind is my cousin Mikie, many of you know he's always been my big brother and best friend since I was born- Mikie lives in Port St Lucie and I've not spoken to him since 5:30 pm ,hours Milton made landfall but the outer bands created an unusual outbreak of many huge, deadly tornadoes(F3's & 4's)- these tornatoes caused fatalities ,leveled homes ,overturned vehicles and much destruction in Port St Lucie....

I'm sure my cousin has no service,if he could call me he would- it's gut wrenching not knowing anything ..... I'm so tempted to just jump in the car to drive up to him- my heart tdlls me " get there"- my head tells me " stay put"U do know at this time it would be very foolish and much too risky

I ask y'all to send those good vibes our way and those of you who pray, please pray for my Cuz.....

64,000 are without power in his City and they are saying there's downed cell service and wifi outages..... I pray that's it- last we spoke he said " there's tornadoes all around us,thunder, crazy lightening and really strong winds- I'll keep you posted"😪

When she was in FLA, my SIL lived in Clearwater, Bradenton, New Port Richey, and, finally, Hudson- all within the bullseye of Milton.

There were four magazines that my parents subscribed to: Life, Look, Reader's Digest, and McCalls- kind of a cut-rate Ladies Home Journal. As I've said before; Harry Truman was in his first Presidential term when I arrived on the scene, so I guess that makes me old.
