I have heard that they have been bought out, but does anyone know by who or what this means for the store? Is there going to be a name change? I have noticed that the Petsmart in my town seems to have given up on restocking the shelves. I went in there several days ago, and there were a lot of empty shelves. They have been completely out of the Pride products, as well as some other foods that I needed for a while. I wonder if we can expect to continue to see a decline in store quality. Or maybe it is just my particular store that sucks?

I'm not sure what's going on with Petsmart themselves but they have had the Pride on clearance lately. I went into my local store on Monday and asked the cashier and the manager if this meant they would no longer carry it. Neither had any idea but both suggested that it could be that NV is changing the Pride label. The manager did say that Pride is not a big seller. This could be why your store was out of it.

I've noticed certain items have not been restocked (dog leashes, certain dog treats, etc...) It does appear Petsmart is discontinuing the Pride line of food. The cans were marked to clear at my stores and I know several other users have noticed the same thing.

At the same time, there have been new items introduced (namely by Purina...litter and the new Muse food.)

They were bought out last month by a group of European and American private investors.  http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2014/12...tself-to-investor-group-for-8-7-billion/?_r=0   The deal is still pending approval by shareholders and takes effect sometime the beginning of this year.  I know Petsmart closed a distribution center that they had here locally and one in Maryland to consolidate operations in PA.  Closing and consolidating was something they were probably doing to trim costs and streamline operations to be more enticing to a potential buyer.

I live in PA, and I hope this won't affect the cat rescue I used to work with. They have a room and adopt-thons on the weekends. The past few years, Petssmart have been jerks to them in a few ways, and about silly things, too.

Oh no! I haven't been to a Petsmart in a few months, but I was planning to go stock up in February. I hope the one I'm going to will still be standing and stocked.  Even for a big chain, the Petsmarts in/near my hometown are good. Change is scary, I really hope ours don't change or close! They work with the humane societies for cat rooms and adoptathons too, and they're well kept and staffed.

I hope Petsmart doesn't follow suit for Target and Sony Store, both companies having announced this past week they would be closing all of their Canadian stores!

I've also read they've been bought out.    Where I live I've only had a Petco as far as big chain pet stores go but  I've just learned they are opening a new Petsmart not too far away.

So even though they've been bought out it looks like they'll still be around.

It depends why the investors bought them. Used to be the real estate was worth more than the business so companies would get bought and the property flipped. That's not the case nowadays with real estate depressed so likely they will remain in business.

Has Banfield been good? Here, regular vets offices have always been closer and more readily available than going to a Petsmart. I've heard awful things about them throughout the years too, and a lot of it has been regarding the pets in the care of the store, but even their online ratings for pet owners have always been very low.

Ours does not even have the vet in it. I love our local vet 3 miles away thigh and likely wouldn't change.

Banfield is good for rountine things like shots dentals and wellness check ups but for anything specialized they go to the cat specialist. Though I have had good vets there who have fixed and sewn up my cats' mishaps the practice is geared more towards preventive care. Banfield has wellness plans where they spread out the expenses of care over the year. It's the only way I can afford to keep all my Kittys well cared for and get their teeth cleaned every year, keep up with shots, deworming , and 2x yearly bloodtest etc. it's not a bad deal.

Totally agree.  They are much less expensive than going to a regular vet for wellness checkups.   They are OK too for small problems like eye infections.   But anything serious or chronic I wouldnt go there and see a specialist instead.   The vets tend to be very busy there so they dont spend alot of time with you and you go back and forth with the techs.   The best thing I like about Banfield is that for every treatment your cat gets they put the entire history on their website.   Including results from blood tests.   This is light years ahead of what other vets offer.   For instance I can look up exactly what medications my cats were given on what date and compare test results.   Its incredibly convenient and very useful.

I work (part time) for PetSmart - yes we were bought out!

Some stores will stay, and some will shut down. However I live (and work) in Canada, so this doesn't affect us as much as the stores in the states.

As far as "clearance" items, it is up to PetSmart as a whole, and that manufacture to decide what is discontinued. Some people have noticed that Pride is on clearance. Our store sells Pride fairly well so I can't see us discontinuing it! We did clear out of Innova, as we barely sell any!

Hope this helps!

PS - just because something is "clearance", we may not discontinue it. I've seen things be "discontinued" but then brought back in a year. I've been with the company for 9 years, so I've seen a lot of weird stuff!

My Petsmart was loaded with products and I haven't heard of them closing.  In fact they just opened this new store about a mile from me last summer.

Your Petsmart must have better management than mine that knows how to order and keep shelves stocked. In my town, the Petsmart has been around for several years, and the Petco just opened. Neither are very impressive. At both stores, there are WAY more food options for dogs than cats.
