I am admittedly an olive junkie.I always have them on hand...at least one kind, sometimes 2 or 3,and to me there's nothing better than a sprinkle of capers on a toasted bagel with a schmeer of cream cheese,a bit of smoked salmon and a slice of tomato.But...what I was going to mention is....there is a type of olive called castelvetrano.I discovered them at WalMart and they are,in my opinion,wonderful....less salty and in a lighter brine, they have a buttery texture yet are firm and not mushy and a milder flavor. They do come with the pit inside them and yes,I have a jar in the fridge. It sounds like people either love olives or hate them, with no in between. I've heard the same thing about okra, which I've also never tried.
I thought capers were fish, but per Google I see they're not. They're also not that appealing looking either, so I can understand you not rushing to try them. And no worries, as I'm in no hurry to try olives, you won't have to try capers anytime soon.
