I just always thought it was very unreasonable to be afraid to the point of hospitalization of something so relatively harmless and small.
Rationally, I know that most spiders will avoid you if they can and only bite when cornered or threatened.
Same with snakes....strangely, I've always loved snakes and have never feared them, even though they are potentionally more deadly than your average spider.
Thats amazing. I couldn't imagine doing that either.

Turtles are hard to care for! The common musk turtle I have, kept getting fungus when he was little. We did everything possible to treat him! Finally we changed out aquariums, and continued the treatment and it disappered. My 2 turtles have a 55 gallon with the proper uv lighting, a basking light, a very expensive filter (cause turtles are messy little things!), and a nice spot to bask. They get pellets, plants and live fish and shrimp to eat. (I think I spend more on turtle food a week then cat food
)

Unfortunatly, they both turned out to be the opposite sex that I had hoped for. The peninsula cooter is a female, which means she can reach a size of 15 inches... The common musk turtle is a male. Which means that he will only grow to be around 4 inches.... I'm going to need a LOT bigger tank!

The only way to really treat that for aquatics is to 'dry dock' them. No water. Tub with an easy to clean substrate, like paper towel, and monitored soakings daily - twice daily. You would carefully scrub the shell with diluted chlorehexadine solution and a very soft tooth brush, allow to dry. Just in case it happens in the future.
If I can find them again...I could show you some horrific pictures of what shell rot can do. I am soo paranoid over my babies shells.

A fully aquatic turtle like a cooter should have it's own aquarium. It's not a wise choice to mix species. With the eventual size difference, she's going to kick his butt, or attempt to snack on him. I have seen some very cool set ups for keeping larger aquatic turtles indoors, such as using these http://www.waterlandtubs.com/ (expensive things)
I've also seen where someone used a couple of round plastic whiskey barrel liners, the ones they use for making fountains out of the barrels. They built frame that went in the corner and made it so that the turtles had dry areas but couldn't climb out of the 'pen', also some zoos or aquariums have indoor setups that you can look at for ideas. Glass aquariums are going to get ridiculously expensive for an adult female cooter..- the same is true for those owning female red eared sliders.

If you can build a pen and pond outside it can solve a lot of problems.
Future thing to consider, your female turtle can lay unfertile eggs (or become egg bound) without a male.

I don't like pellets. Corn and wheat aren't a cat's natural food, neither are they a turtle's. And the preservatives in them scare me.

and I rambled again
Maybe other readers out there are learning a bit?

Actually, cooters are more baskers then the common musk turtle who spends most of his life in the water. It is OK to mix the 2 species... There is a greater chance of the musk turtle trying to do damage then the larger cooter because Musk turtle can be more aggressive. But they do great with one another. They where both hatchlings when I got them... (the musk turtle was an egg that my DH found and happend to hatch in his hand. He had know idea what was about to come out of it!
) So they have grown up with one another. They sit on each other all the time. She is already twice his size and neither have ever been aggressive with one another.

I do have a question though, and dont think me stupid for asking.... whats "egg bound"? Does that mean she can't lay her eggs?

I just looked it up! I had never thought about the fact that she would lay eggs! I hate to hijack this thread but now I'm concerned. I thought about very thing else but that! Do you know what size she would start laying eggs at? I just measured her and she is 5.5 inches! (Well I guess its time to get her a bigger tank....) I also felt her to see if she had any eggs right now which she doesn't... But I want to start preparing the tank incase she does soon.... She's only about 1 and 1/2 years old? Is she still too young? Ohhh gezz.....

I have two cats: Nollee (8 month female calico) and Tiger (5 year old male orange tabby polydactyl)! I also have two huge albino frogs, a golden gourami, a blue gourami, and an algae fish! Two of my blue gourami's were murdered by my frogs earlier this week! I wish to have more pets in the future ex: another puppy, a bearded dragon, a chinchilla, more fish, and maybe more kitties! Here is to wishful thinking
