In front of our buiilding is a (unfortunately growing) family of cats. The mother got pregnant and had three kittens. When they were about four or so months she got pregnant again and now is caring for three more. Of the first three kitten, two boys and a girl. Now at 7-7 1/2 months (best guess: perhaps a few weeks in either direction) we took the girl, named Joy, to be spayed last thursday. She will be with us until the stitches are removed in two weeks time. Pantera and Pimenta are not happy about this, Pimenta being the bigger problem. Pantera has adjusted, and is ok as long as the little one stays out of her way, but Pimenta is clearly jealous. She hisses every time the two are in the same area, made worse by the fact that Joy is not at all fased by Pimenta`s dramatics (Joy is also not at all scared by Pantera; interesting...). The only thing that bothers Joy is that she cries a storm every time she is on the balcony- from there she can see her mom and brothers, and they see her. Man, does the little one have a pair of lungs :eek2:

Here`s some photos. The first is of the mother, named Neta:

Here`s the two brothers. The orange one is Leon, and the grey and white is Pinginho (taken about three months ago) Leon is the brave one: at barely four months old he was already trying to run off adult Toms. Recently he tried to hunt an Angolan Chicken and a rooster- the rooster was several times his size and he still ran it out of the area. At only seven months of age! His brother, Pinguinho, is the clever one. Also, at seven or so months Leon is already the size of their mother, and Pinguinho is close to it.

Finally, Joy. She seems small, but that is only because her brothers are growing so fast. She is the same size or a bit bigger than Pimenta was at the same age. Yes, Leon is with her. Also taken about three months or so ago

Joy is beginning to adapt, but it`s going to be a long two weeks

Once Joy has recovered and returned to the family, and once the new kittens are weened, Neta (the mother) is next on the list to be spayed.

Thank you all for the kind words. Joy is doing fine: tomorrow will be one week since the surgery, and she is recovering well (except that she has come very, very close to popping her stitches. She doesn't understand the notion of rest ) She is eating and drinking water (and peeing and poopng) more than Pantera and Pimenta put together

Here's a photo taken about two weeks ago. You can see Joy with her brother Leon: they are the same age, but notice the difference in size. And Joy is not a runt, she is very average in size for her age. For comparison, she weighs roughly three pounds, more or less the same as Pimenta did (who was similar in size, but a bit lankier/longer), but half that of Pantera (who was only slightly bigger, but weighed 5.5-6 pounds at six months of age)

Thanks for the kind words. Eight days on, Joy still cries on the balcony- she misses her family- but has adapted to her convalescence. She loves playing: her style of play is reminiscent of Pantera, frenetic and nothing held back

Apologies for the lack of news, busy life...

Joy returned to the vet and had her stitches removed last thursday. She`s back with her family, and ready for the rest of her life. Outside of being unusually agressive with her brothers- Pantera`s influence, no doubt  - everything is status quo ante.

From left to right: Pinguinho, Neta (aka Mom), Leon, and Joy. Hard to believe Joy is the same age as her brothers- barely eight months!-, and is by no means a runt. I was wrong about her weight: at the vet she was weighed, and is 2.6kg ( or 5lbs. 12 oz.). Given that she weighed at least 2kg before the surgery, it means she gained around 250-300g ( or 9-11 oz.) during the two weeks with us. No surprise, given the way she ate while with us
