I was curious if anyone here uses water additives to keep their cat's teeth clean? I was thinking of buying some but was unsure what brand. Any suggestions?

I also don't know how effective they are. Does it help with plaque and tartar? Have you noticed a difference?

Last thing, are they safe? It is an odd concept to me.

Sorry if this has been asked before.

I've tried using water dental additives for my boy but my boy is very sensitive to it after I spray it on his food although it states there are no taste, color or smell. He refuse his food when this is sprayed on it.

I also tried this product which I was told that it is quite effective but it has a strong seaweed kind of smell and so again, my boy rejected too.

The next thing is to brush your cat's teeth and again, my boy, as you know, run away......................

You can try some of this products and see if your cat will accept it or not.

I have been using this Oxyfresh, you will need a 32 OZ drinking container. You add a cap full into 32 oz of water. Cost around 17.00 for 16 oz.
This does not correct existing cavities. Nothing will.

Be careful with the sea weed stuff. If your cat develops hyper thyroid, discontinue seaweed use.

I've been using Tropiclean water additive in one water bowl. It does help a bit with gingivitis and bad breath.

I also use Tropiclean gel on their teeth and a toothbrush every few days.

Luckily, I have a local dentist vet. My cat spotty is a Thai Suphalak they are prone to have dental issues. He's 7 and has 5 teeth removed. He sees the dentist every 6 months. Only $150.00 including all meds and no matter how many teeth get pulled. Hopefully a 6-month cleaning schedule will stop the cavities.

~ From what I read and hear there is no benefit in using dental additives.
Steamed chicken thighs and letting kitty chew the ends off the bone is the only "dental care " that has been shown to improve gum & teeth health. Some say chicken gizzard is also good. 😽🦴

I have used Oratene for 10 years now and my cats have always had good teeth at the vet's. I started it when I had my cat's teeth cleaned and found out how much it cost. It must do something. I have tried a few others over the years but the Oratene is completely odorless and is the only one they will accept. I use one pump in 2 cups of water. all I know is my cats were getting their teeth cleaned every year and since I started using it they haven't needed it. The vet says their teeth look good.

Do you use it in a filtered fountain at all? I haven't been putting any in the fountain as I thought it would filter it. But I put it in their still waters. Magnus uses the still ones and won't touch the fountain and his are most prone to gingivitis.

I have found as I get older that products promise to be safe today are unsafe 15-20 years later! I also use chicken thigh bones frm which I have removed most ot the meat! Sometime they get the meat but only after I have blanched them to kill bacteria! Be careful not to cook them! They need to be uncooked! Cooked ones can splinter! In the wild cats eat, and sink their teeth into raw bones which keeps too much tartar from forming!

That's true that it happens for sure! But we've also extended cats' lives a lot. It'll be interesting to see what happens as we keep learning.

I keep both a bowl, and running fountain, and the 3 cats drink much more water with the fountain! I read that they like running water. Seems to be true for my cats!
