Was told he's a Maine Coon?

When I got him I was told he was around 11yo, that was 2 years ago. His back is skin and bones at this age. I was told he was a Maine coon but to me he never seemed big enough yet he was much larger than any cat. Someone once called him a Neublung? But they looked again and said he was a Maine coon.

He does not look like a Maine Coon. His facial structure and ears are set differently than a MC. He's also does not have the right body type. Certainly not a Nebulung either.

Who is "somebody"? If it's the shelter/rescue you got him from, many of them will give a breed name to the adoptable cats to help move them out of the system faster. If it's just someone in your circle of family or friends, they don't know the breed standards and again, are just making a guess. Vets also, don't see a lot of purebreed cats usually so may not be equipped to make that guess either.

I'd say domestic longhair, solid blue (the dilute of black) with white. I see some tabby markings on his face but the body itself seems to be one color. Hopefully someone else better at identifying exact coat types will come along to add to this.

BTW, when were these taken because he seems somewhat overweight and you mentioned he's skin and bones now. The 5th photo, with the purple collar on seems the healthiest and not related to the other pictures - it almost looks like an entirely different cat so I'm confused on the timeline shown.

If he is a pb mc whoever you got him from would provide papers etc. In the photo by the tree he does look a bit mc to me anyway. Most likely he is called a dlh with possible forest cat ancestry. He is beautiful 😻

Doesn't look Maine Coon or Nebelung or any forest cat traits. A nice Domestic Longhair. Pretty sure he's a blue tabby. You don't see those facial markings on solid cats even with ghost striping. Tabby stripes on the body easily disappear on some long hair cats, especially with blue, so it doesn't mean he's solid. And you can see a nice rufousing pattern (if that's what you call it, I don't know) on his undersides.

Indeed, he looks overweight in many of those photos, so he doesn't look "skin and bones" to me. If just his back is "skin and bones" but the rest of him is overweight, that's still overweight. What's the most current picture of him?

The breed apps are garbage and have no relation to what a cat actually is.

My purebreed, very standard looking Maine Coon kept coming up as a domestic long hair and, my domestic long hair showed up as a Maine Coon or Siberian.

They are meant just for giggles not not to be taken seriously.

I think your cat is mostly Siberian. They look a lot like Maine Coons. There are some features your cat doesn’t have that lead me to believe he’s not full Siberian. He doesn’t have little tufts of fur at the top of each ear and he doesn’t have fur on the bottom side of each paw. I have attached a couple of pictures of my Siberian, Ulysses. The bread has a great temperament.

I'd say a domestic long hair. Most cats have no breeds in them and he doesnt have any traits of a MC. Hes still a stunning boy
