Tolly is in the hospital. While he does indeed have more resorptive lesions causing him mouth pain, he is in much more serious trouble..possible liver failure. That round stomach I noticed that started a couple days ago is fluid, his entire middle is full of fluid. He had an x-ray. His heart and lungs are not in danger at this point, but what has caused the fluid?

Liver failure is the first assumption, naturally, because of his history. Lymphoma is a possibility. We don't know. For now, I have left him there to have an ultrasound. It may not be good enough, their equipment is not state of the art. I may be taking him to a specialist. Hopefully tomorrow, if needed. Vet wanted permission to run a FeLV test. I said of course.

Because he didn't have any breakfast, I stupidly forgot to give him his phenobarbital. He had it at ten last night, so wasn't seriously overdue, but when I learned I would have to leave him there, I nearly had hysterics about the phenobarbital. Fortunately they had some liquid there. I refused to release him to them, until they brought the liquid medicine to me and let me give it to him.

Depending on any findings (or not) this afternoon, he is facing a trip to the specialist for a more thorough ultrasound, anesthesia to do a liver biopsy, and to drain the fluid...and I don't know what else. My vet asked me to think about would I do chemotherapy with him.

It's all too much, when to look at him you see a thriving glowing with health cat.

I am out of my mind. Pray for him, please.

Oh sweetheart, I know that sinking in the pit-of-the-stomach head buzzing everything-is-surreal feeling. :heart3: :heart3: :heart3: :hugs: :hugs: :hugs:

You don't need to make any decisions right now. You need answers first. One step at a time.

IF it comes to it, and you want to talk about chemo, I'm here for you. :heart3:

:hugs: :hugs: :hugs: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes:

Oh my gosh, Gail, this is most distressing.
If it is Lymphoma, isn't that what Lazlo has, and look how well he's doing.  But maybe it's something else, something way less serious.  Try, try, try not to stress out too much until you know what you're really dealing with.  I know, the waiting is probably the hardest part.  I'm just so sorry this is happening.  Vibes and prayers coming your way.

Thank you everyone. No word yet. I miss my Tolly boy! I was supposed to go visit a friend's cat who is alone while she's on vacation. I'm not taking care of him, her neighbor is, but she asked me to go spend time with him if I could, to keep him from getting lonely. I had planned to spend the entire afternoon with him today, after Tolly's vet visit.

Instead I've had to stay home and wait for my vet to call. Even knowing it would probably be a couple hours, I could have spent some time there (it's a 25 minute drive each way though) but I felt the need to be home. Besides, it probably wouldn't have been good for Mittens to be around me when I am so upset anyway. But I feel bad, I know he (Mittens) must be lonely.

It makes me sick to think of Tolly being at the vet not knowing what's happening. Send him so vibes, okay? Maybe he'll get them and feel more relaxed, even without knowing why.

Tolly is home!

The ultrasound showed irregularities in the liver, but my vet does not like to guess at things. She was able to ascertain that his kidneys are okay, so that's something. His heart and lungs, so far, are not affected by the fluid.

After the blood work comes back she may put him on a diuretic.

Tolly has an appointment next Tuesday with a radiologist for a more high-tech ultrasound, and for it to be done and read by a specialist.

In the mean time I am to watch him for any signs of distress, such as vomiting, mouth breathing, inappetence, or any other change in behavior. And jaundice, of course. So far he is doing fine.

When he first came home, the first thing he did was run all over the house, to make sure everything was as it should be. Then he required that I get down on the floor and let him wind all around me so he could tell me all about it, which he did, very loudly and copiously. Queen Eva watched closely and Mazy kept stretching her neck out, sniffing, and hissing. Finally Tolly got tired of the hissing and dashed at Mazy, swatting her across the face. Mazy has stopped hissing, LOL!

After he was done telling me all about his ordeal, he had something to eat. I gave him only a small amount, 1/4 of a 3 ounce can. He ate that up and asked for more but I told him he should wait, as I don't want it all coming back up. So he's now having a bit of a bath, to wash away the bad smells. His tummy is all shaved of course, and at first when he licked there he startled, not expecting to feel his tongue on his skin I suppose, or maybe it was skin on his tongue that felt weird. So instead he's washing the fur just at the edge of where he was shaved. I'm glad he has the self warming beds to curl up on, I don't want him to be cold.

Unfortunately I have to go out to work tonight. I want to stay home with him so bad, but he will probably just sleep anyway. I'll give him a little more to eat in a little while, I don't have to leave until 6:15.

Thank you for all the well wishes, thoughts, prayers and vibes. They are working.

:lol3: Of course he needed to tell you all about it! I'm taking it as good news that there were no clear signs of a problem. The most important thing is that Tolly feels like Tolly! I'm sorry you have to work tonight, but I'm sure he'll be fine.

:vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: for both of you!!!!

I've come home to a Pink Fur Mouse across the room! :banana1:

It may not sound like much but what it means is that while I was gone, Tolly went to his Fur Mouse Pile, selected his Favorite Pink Fur Mouse, and played with it. And I thought he would sleep while I was gone! Shows how much I know.:lol3:

Tolly met me at the door, besides. He hasn't done that in years.

He's had a meal and is now curled up on the couch, but not on any of the beds available, just the couch. With that bare belly I would have thought he'd want one of the self-warming beds.

Thank you all, again and again, for your continued support :grphug:

Thanks Laurie. I'm so wound up I can't seem to go to bed. And I haven't eaten a thing today either. :(

I was very wound up last night and unable to go to bed. Part of the problem was I forgot to eat. Finally I got a granola bar and a glass of milk and settled on the couch with my book.

Tolly and Jennie and Mazy were upon me immediately, as usual. Tolly at my middle (he beat Jennie by about half a second) Jennie on my legs and Mazy on my chest.

Queen Eva requires additional play time at this juncture, which is implemented by my fishing toys out of the box next to the couch and throwing them for her, while she chases them down. We do this every night. (in addition to her earlier intensive interactive Game Time)

Eventually, snack gone, play time over, as I read I began to fall asleep also as usual. What I do when I realize I am no longer reading, rather my eyes are closed and I am asleep is reach up and turn off the light, which dislodges Mazy (I am not allowed to move when she is on me)

Then I reach down and gather Tolly off my middle, and pull him into my arms as I turn onto my side. Jennie adjusts (with grumbling) to my change in position, and we sleep like that.

Eventually I woke up, brushed my teeth and went to bed. After I settled in bed and began to drift back to sleep, I heard the unmistakable sounds of Tolly playing with his Fur Mice again. He was carrying it around making his mrrrewomph noises, and throwing it down the stairs, chasing it, and bringing it back up.

I fell asleep with a smile on my face.

This morning Tolly is his normal cheerful self. He is currently draped over my lap purring very hard and reminding me that it has been an hour since he had his Denosyl pill and it is time for his breakfast.

As far as I can tell the fluid has not changed, it is neither more nor less. I'm going to try to get a picture of his shaved Tummy later. He lets me stroke it but does not want me looking at it.

PS right after I wrote that, Tolly allowed me this:

Thank you so much everyone, for the well wishes and support.

Blood work is in. All liver values are dead center normal. As are kidney values, thyroid and most everything else. Pancreatic and glucose numbers slightly elevated, but not much, could be due to stress.

However, his white cell count is 22,000. This can indicate infection, cancer, or who knows what. We still don't know what's causing the fluid build up, and my vet definitely saw some irregularities in the liver from her (imperfect) ultra sound.

So. Tolly is going on antibiotic in case of infection (baytril) for a couple weeks, and a small dose of diuretic for a few days, to try to reduce the fluid. I'm to measure his middle every now and then and monitor his weight (I have a baby scale) to gauge if the fluid is increasing (or decreasing),

The perplexing thing is, Tolly doesn't act sick in any way. He has a hearty appetite and is playing with joyful abandon.

Tolly did not like being measured the first time though I know it didn't hurt. He just didn't see any reason to let me wrap the tape measure (soft) around him, I guess. Since then he's gotten used to it. He's 17 inches around, no change as of yet. Hope that diuretic works fast.
