That's because you're considerate of other people's feelings and don't like confrontation. You're not alone. He sounds very opinionated and perhaps critical but I'm glad you can see the good side of him too. I think we all know people like that and rather than argue or dispute their feelings sometimes it's easier to let it go in one ear and out the other. If you wanted to comment at all, just say something like every family is different, and leave it at that then move on.I do everything i can to avoid fights and arguments.
I'm glad you have such a wonderful relationship with your niece and when she grows up she will be thankful to have you in her life. Try to remember that's what really counts.
