The effort, and expense, it takes to get pets into Hawaii is astronomical. Most folks would never do it. It really is an extravagant- expensive- process. We offered to take the pets...

It is, and I am familiar with it. It was kind of you to offer to take care of them. In the early part of this thread, I mentioned my Canadian friends who found a little blind in one eye cat at a colony that was attached to the location where they were staying. They brought her home to Canada, but it involved a lot of paper work, the Canadian embassy, vet visits and clearances, etc.

Your family must have been able to qualify for the 5 day or less quarantine in HI?

Oh, there was no quarantine. Vet visits started 5 months out, and there were many. Last vet visit had to occur within 72 hours of arrival on Hawaii soil and required 8 "signed" paper copies of vet approval for each pet. The military knows how to do this. It is just extremely time consuming, expensive, and frustrating.

Yes, I have a friend in HI who is retired military and they do know how to expedite the paperwork. That is fortunate for your family! Also very fortunate cats and dog to be cherished that much to go through all the trouble.

Funny thing is- the time consuming part is 10 times worse than the monetary component.

Pets are family, though.

I flew a dog out here from MO once. He was a rescue who had mange and the paperwork, even for a short flight within the states, was daunting. Yes, they are family.
