All lot numbers/use by dates between N24 1124 to N24 1224
The products were distributed between 11/14/2023 – 12/20/2023. These products were packaged in clear plastic and sold primarily in retail stores located in the states of: CT, MA, MD, NC, NY, PA & VA.

One lot each of the company’s Kitten Grind, Kitten Mix, and Puppy Mix products tested positive for salmonella and listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria that causes listeria, Blue Ridge Beef informed North Carolina officials on Dec. 15, 2023.


That prompted the company to issue a voluntary recall of all lots with lot numbers N24 1114 to N24 1224. The products have “use by” dates of Dec. 12, 2024.

Purina Pro Plan Pet food - this is a keep an eye on this, the FDA is investigating at this point, there isn't a recall at the moment. But, again you will want to keep an eye on this.

Update on Purina Pro Plan Issue


As of January 6, 2024, the public Facebook group Saving Pets One Pet @ A Time has received reports of 314 sick animals (233 dogs and 81 cats) in the USA and Canada.

Ninety-one (91) of them have died.

The FDA has not yet released any information on the number of complaints the agency has received.

What is the FDA doing?
FDA is aware of reports of pet illnesses and is in the process of evaluating those reports.

In response to our request for comment, we received the following statement on January 4, 2024:

“We encourage pet owners or their veterinarians to submit reports of illness or other adverse events associated with pet food directly to FDA by following the instructions on this page: How to Report a Pet Food Complaint.”

January 27, 2024 – One lot of Viva Duck for Dogs (Ground), Viva Duck for Dogs (Chunked), Viva Duck for Cats and Viva Pure Duck (for cats and dogs) has been recalled due to potential Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The lot under recall is Lot 22853. The product is distributed as frozen 1lb bricks in clear vacuum packaging. Please see the example of product labels. Viva started shipping this lot out on 10/24/23 and the last units were distributed on 12/06/23.

The FDA obtained and tested samples of Viva Duck for Dogs (Chunked) Lot 22853 after a consumer complaint and found that the samples were positive for Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes.

FDA Warning Letter: FDA issues Warning Letter to Agila Corporation dba Woody’s Pet Food Deli, after a August 29 through September 12, 2023 inspection of the company’s production facility revealed significant violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice, Hazard Analysis, and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Food for Animals requirements, including the finding of Salmonella Reading and Listeria monocytogenes in an “in process” sample of Woody’s Pet Food Deli Raw Free Range Turkey with Supplements pet food for dogs and cats.

interesting study on the effect of lead pellets in pheasants in dog food in UK. I don't know if pheasants are included in dog food in other countries, nor how they are killed for it. This information is for you to do as you will, but I felt it only right that the possibility of a problem with the lead should be mentioned. According to forest rangers shooting too many lead pellets into a tree will kill it. Some of the larger birds, eagles have suffered due to lead pellets in their prey. ( Lead poisoning | The Raptor Center (umn.edu) ) so I would expect this connection to be valid for dogs too.

According to the FDA report, Central Valley Ag Cooperative, which has locations in Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska, issued a recall because it was concerned about potential contamination with Salmonella. This is Lot Number BO 624179808 11399 OXBOW

Canada =

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), in collaboration with provincial partners, is investigating an outbreak of 35 confirmed cases of Salmonella Lome infections in seven provinces between March 2020 and January 2024. The illnesses have been linked to exposure to pet geckos. Cases have been confirmed in British Columbia (2), Alberta (2), Saskatchewan (2), Manitoba (2), Ontario (18), Quebec (8) and New Brunswick (1). Seven cases (20%) are in children 5 years of age or younger.
