It's been a really long time since I've been by here.
And right now, I feel like talking about cats.
So, here I am.

Tub and Dood are 4-1/2 to 5 years old now, adults, no longer young cats/kittens.
They are both indoor/outdoor cats.
The house is always open.
They come and go as they please.
Surprisingly, they spend a lot of time in the house, maybe more outdoors.
They do roam but not very far.
They're both neutered.

It's been a long time for them since the eruption.
They seem to have completely forgotten about it.
When I brought them back from our temporary evacuation home after 3 to 4 months, they were ecstatic.
They checked everything out and comfortably moved right back into the house and area.

Being more social and outgoing, Dood has made friends with our closest neighbors.
That's obvious because Dood began picking up behaviors that were discouraged by us.
He learned them somewhere else, most especially that the kitchen is a place for food.
They are fed and eat out on the lanai, all the time around here.
Whenever they sense they're about to be fed, they run to follow us out to their bowls on the lanai.
Even now, they're still never fed in the kitchen by us.
Now, he is constantly around the kitchen checking for food.
But, Neither cat is a beggar.
They're both well mannered.
Plus, they've both learned that the new pop-top of a can being opened means food
They didn't learn it from us.

As kittens they were fed both wet and dry food.
They stopped eating the wet food.
So, we stopped putting it out for them.
He learned the sound of a can opening somewhere else.
Tub has learned it from Dood around here.

I was adamant that they would not be taught to be kitchen pests.
Other than being underfoot all thr time now, Dood is not a beggar.
But then, they always have food and water in their bowls out on the lanai.
Whenever the food gets down to about a 1/2 bowl, they get stressed and come get us to add more.
They don't like their bowls to be less than full.

The biggest problem I have with them is that black cats are very hard to see in the dark.
So far I haven't, but it's very hard to not step on one when walking around with all the lights off, gotta be real careful and step lightly.

Both cats have begun to show scattered white hairs in their coats.
Dood is getting a lot more that look as if they might turn into spots.
Hopefully not.
I like black cats.

The sun just came out.
rather than continuing with this, I'm going out to work in the yard.

I love black cats, too. I love all cats, but black and tortoiseshell are my favorites, aesthetically speaking. I've asked my roomies to take their phones with them if they get up late at night, and use the flashlight app. Problem solved. I see well enough in the house at any time of day/night, so I don't need to do this. Plus, my tuxedo stays in with me; my blue/cream roams sometimes, but he's visible enough.

Yeah, they're doing well.

Doodle is of Siamese ancestory.
He is very vocal, talks to me incessantly by meowing all the time.
He also has a Siamese yowl, almost, not as bad as a real one though.
Tubby is much quieter, never heard him meow, ever.
And, apparently he's just a generic cat of some type.
Dood's smaller, about 12#.

While Tub's larger, about 20#.

They are litter mates.
No doubt they have different fathers, though.
Their color is all they have in common.
You can see white hairs on Dood's coat, some beginning to form spots.
Tub does have a few scattered in his coat.
Not enough to see in the pic.

They both constantly bug us for pets, pats, rubs, scratches and attention.

Dood bugs Tub incessantly until he finally gets PO'd.
Then Tub tries to stomp that little bugger.
Then, I would come over and protect the little guy from the big guy.
I finally figured out that the little guy starts almost all the confrontations.
Now all I do is monitor things so that he doesn't do Dood any real damage.

They both look like grumps in the pics, but are mostly pretty sweet, for cats.

More differences between our cats -

Dood will walk up to either of us in the house or yard, then stands on one of our feet.
Not sure why, ... contact, trying to hold us in place, or ...?
He does not like to sit on one's lap.
He'll stay as long as he's scratched, but shoots off as soon as you stop.
Same with being held, He'll stay as long as he's being scratched, or such, happily purring, but again demanding down as soon as you stop.
He also thinks he's a dog.
He likes to drink from the toilet.
He will also drink from a mud puddle or similar without question.

Tub really likes M'Lady's lap when she has a throw quilt spread on her.
He mixes dough and curls up to lay down.
When I get up, he follows me into the kitchen and begins rubbing my legs and ankles with his sides and tail while I make coffee.
Always makes me check to see if their bowls are full.
When I get my coffee, he follows me out to the lanai.
Then, when I sit down on the porch swing to drink it, he follows me out and sits on the floor staring at me until I fold the fleece throw blanket up and pat it when it's on the swing besides me.
Then, he jumps up onto then fleece blanket and mixes dough.
He'll reach over and press his paw on my leg thinking about mixing on me.
But, I'm too hard 'cause I'm skinny, not enough body fat to make me soft.
Then, he lays down on the fleece and goes to sleep while I pet and just lay my hand on him.
He's content until I get up for more coffee.

He hates it when there's anything on the surface of the of the water in their bowl.
He reaches in his paw, soaking it, and scrapes the surface clean, spreading water all over the floor.
He prefers drinking dripping water from a hose bib.
I have to keep it dripping constantly for him.
He even crawls under my car when it rains and drinks the dripping water from it.
He is much more finicky than Dood.

EDIT:
I lived in Alaska for 35 years before retiring to Hawaii.
I have this fantasy of taking our tropical jungle cats to Alaska in January or February to see how they react to snow and sub zero weather.
They'd probably be fascinated at first, but tire very quickly of it.

I'm babysitting the cats while M'lady's gone for her annual pilgrimage home to visit kids. mom, etc.
The 2 cats have been bugging me to death for the attention they would normally get from 2 people.
If they weren't such sweetly mannered sudden death killers, I'd get fed up with them.
They are getting jealous of each other.
If I pet one, the other gets jealous.
It's getting to be a real PIA.

They are siblings, brothers, both neutered, and have lived together all their lives.
They tolerate each other, but only so far.
I would not call them bonded.
They eat side by side from separate bowls, ignoring each other.
They have never gone hungry, developing the need to protect their food from others, as a lot of pets do.
But, they will beat each other up to be able to hog our attention.

It seems that they have divided that up into territories.
In the mornings, while I'm drinking my coffee, Tubb comes over, sits donw on the floor and stares up at me so that I'll fold the fleece throw blanket and lay it down next to me so that he can jump up, lay down on it, and lean onto me to get his morning pets, scratches, and rubs.

Dood has staked out my computer room at night.
He jumps up on my PC, walks along across my desks and crawls up onto the printers to sleep at my back.

Quite often I hear squawks from Dood crying that Tobb's beating up on him.
I'll intervene.
Last night, Tub came into my PC room to lay on the floor near me.
I heard cat squawks.
Dood, the little guy, was attacking Tubb with mouthfuls of fur scattered all over the floor.
I had to intervene to save Tubb.

They're good cats.
Their only problem is sharing us.
