The new Condo has a strange smell to me,can't place it but the smell of sisal spool?
I had gotten a new 6 foot tall cat scratching post with shelves and a bottom cubby over the winter and when I opened the box it smelled horrible, a combination of glue and a weird wood smell. I had to leave it in the garage for over a month, slowly assembling it to help it air out. Since it was winter and cold here, I had to wait for sunny, not snowing or raining and breezy days to leave it outdoors for the smell to finally go away.

I assume since it came from China and contains wood products, it needed to be treated or fumigated to enter the country. I almost returned it to Chewy but thankfully it no longer smells.

Yeah, that was the smell- besides sisal like a weird wood smell- first time I bought GoPetClub product from Wayfair- if I would have smelled it before I assembled it ,it would've went right back!

Well, their more interested in hanging out outside lately so I've got the sliding glass doors it's in front of open to air out and I'm not smelling that anymore(though I'm sure they do)...... See what happens ,Bella was up there today rubbing in the catnip I sprinkled but everyone else is outside

Something I've noticed,I'm wondering how uncomfortable terribly long nails might be?

Since Timmy has been inside ( one year this month) his favorite place to scratch is leather and corrugated scratch boxes,a heck of alot of scratching - ALOT plus the moment he'd come off the living room carpet and onto my bedroom carpet which he'd stick to. Since his nails were trimmed last week he's not scratched a thing except one scratch box yesterday after a nap ..... isn't that interesting ?

I had actually noticed that with Graycie when she starts getting her nails stuck on things she scratches her poles alot more- it must not feel very nice to stick to surfaces and have your nails sticking out that they hit the ground

My boy will still scratch whether nails trimmed or not.
You keep him trimmed well though I'd imagine?

Graycie grows like weeds and basically do everyone regularly but she's always waaay longer

Timmy I can't get a hold of those little tootsies YET

So I do mean " terribly long" -

Cal always gets more active after I do his. So I'd imagine it can be uncomfortable for some cats.

Do his grow really long?I'm very curious about this.... of course we know the ones that grow into their skin, like polydactyls are uncomfortable when not trimmed short but for normal digits I wonder, you know when you hear the click click on the ground, which is " terribly long" for a cat

They get pretty long and sharp for the front paws and he gets hooked while scratching and sometimes I see he’s trying to free himself. Also the dew claw gets hook too. My boy doesn’t like his paws touch and I’ll only clip them when he’s groggy in his sleep and I’ll try to trim as many and as quick as I can.

Usually when I hear him when he’s walking and I know that his nails are long again.

Hek used to panic when she got her claws hooked in something, and it took her FOREVER to realize (or admit, at least) that I could actually detach her. She was much happier when I started having the vet clip her every other month. We did it when I took her for her Solensia shot, so not a big extra cost. LOL, doing it myself would have ended in blood. Lots of it. MINE. "DO NOT TRIFLE WITH THE ROYAL PERSONAGE!" was her motto.

Yeah- this bothers me for Timmy because like Mamanyt1953 Mamanyt1953 darling girl Hek he does seem much more comfortable with nice trimmed nails not sticking into things or causing any interference- just like my Graycie.

Graycie will just lie there and literally give me each paw to clip so no big deal but Timmy?I wish they made better cat scratchers more like solid tree bark that actually helped file down cat claws- I used to watch Timmy outside go to town on Palm Trees and searched quite a bit for more natural scratchers that actually did something besides stimulate that instinct to scratch & mark pheramones.... anyone ever see any?

See if you can find any bug free big sticks or chunks of wood lying around outside for Timmy.

I'd like to find a high and big enough tree stump but I'm in a Condo, lol. I guess the problem with ' dead'' wood is that it dries out unless treated- probably why they don't sell natural wood scratch stumps, right?

Next time I'm at my friends property ( horse ranch)I'll have to scout around and see what I can find- worth a try

I Googled a bit and found a few things mostly on Amazon, called variations of "cat nail file scratchers." They are strips you attach to a flat surface -- one even says to tape to the bottom of a litter box under the litter. They seem like a good idea but they don't get great reviews and sound like they are just sandpaper. Some reviews were positive... might be worth exploring.

I like the idea of sand paper in the litter box! I'd like to give that a try ,if Timmy liked it it would really work well

Do you have a link for me by any chance?Im pretty lame on Googling

Found this it is not fancy but made of cedar wood. So natural and cedar is bug resistant
Cat scratching Posts - Wood scratching posts for cats - Shoo-Kitty- Natural Cedar Scratching posts-

Etsy also may have something. They have small horizontal one to larger vertical scratchers
https://www.etsy.com/search?q=natural wood cat scratcher&ref=auto-1&as_prefix=natural wood cat s
Whoa- hefty price for something that may or may not look appealing to my Timmy..... That top one is exactly what I had in mind I wonder how their return policy is?lol

It is a hefty price most likely because it is cedar. Around here cedar is very expensive. My husband built me a raise bed for growing basil plants but great for thing you eat. Would probably buy metal beds if I needed more. I would check on the return policy. My eyes popped at that price too, but it an expensive wood.🤐

Cedar certainly has a very distinct scent which gives me great pause as well - in South Florida I'm confident most outside kitties have never seen a cedar tree, lol

Truthfully if that was a Palm Tree trunk with its pseuodobark I'd save my pennies and go for it- Palm trees don't really have bark,it's tissue dried out from shedded fronds.... Cats love it and it really files those nails down
