I've been dealing with a lot of stress lately, and medication that stopped having an effect very early in its usage. I now have to wait for a call from a specialised mental health institute, because my psychologist said I probably need more help than she can offer me. I'm really nervous about this, and it's hard to admit it's come to this. So much uncertainty at the moment about this, and it's making it super hard to focus on the half dozen deadlines I have for college.

I'm a bit of a book addict so that makes me both mad and sad! Poor kid. Hopefully she will also have teachers who inspire a love of reading.

I had a children's book party online last month and my hostess rewards are supposed to be here tomorrow. I'm going to be stalking my front porch till they get here!!

I'm sorry DownTheLane DownTheLane . Change is difficult enough but this adds uncertainty too. Hopefully soon you can find it to be a blessing in disguize. This new person might be the one who can help you most.

Let me know what you think of this-I didn't opt for a gift receipt when I ordered the book for the little girl. Normally I would've, but her mom is known to return gifts for the money, which she then spends on herself. If she returns the book, I'll get my money back. I'm also hoping this will discourage her from returning it, if she doesn't get anything out of doing so.

Right thing? Wrong thing?

I think that's fine. The mom might still try to sell the book for money for herself, but that's an extra step.

Normally I'm always team gift receipt, especially for clothes as they might not fit right, but based on what you're saying, I think not having one is the right choice.

I agree with the others; gift reciepts are not an obligation just something nice when you can. And in this case; I definitely wouldn't send one. Just the fact that you can tell if she returns it might deter her too.

How old is the little girl? It's too bad she's not hooked up with Dolly Partons Imagination Library. My kids got one free book every month through age 5 and it was AMAZING! It's community sponsored but someone had to sign my kids up. I took advantage of the Parents as Teachers program when my kids were little so that's who signed them up.

I'm helping DD finish her research paper today and we need to go get poster board for her presentation. She's almost driving me nuts because she wants to hash out ever edit out loud with me. But for her this is a developing skill. She's getting the hang of it but math has always been her easier subject. I can see her wheels turning and her finished paper is looking almost nothing like her first draft. I'm really proud of her! I told her she gets to be creative with making her poster board. Since she wrote about Dr. Seuss she wants to make it look sort of like his illustrations; colorful and unique shapes. Now to get DS to write his imaginary journal entry... :lol2:

She's almost 7. It breaks my heart to think about what she's already missed out on-not just books, but also music and arts and crafts. All she gets are dolls, stuffed animals, and play makeup.

She does have a couple American Girl dolls, and I loved that series when I was her age, so I got her Meet Samantha.

There's a woman I know who doesn't buy books for her little girl. I've bought a book for her, and plan to keep doing it on occasion. I hate how selfish this woman is. She's the kind who thinks girls are meant to be "beautiful little fools", and never gets her daughter anything that would improve her mind.
Fortunately, unless she manages to keep the kid very isolated or makes that kind of lifestyle look really desirable, the kid is likely to rebel, hard, when she reaches adolescence. And that's always extremely satisfying, lol. Always good to plant that seed early though, get some books to that kid asap!

I tried to sign up for the Dolly Parton library a couple of times through the website, but it keeps telling me my area isn't eligible (????). I don't necessarily need the books because I have a ton from my teaching days, especially from tje school that closed and we were allowed to take whatever, but I thought it would have been nice to do anyway.

I’m putting this here, because I don’t know where else, and I’m getting it off my chest, not asking anyone here, I promise.
Gotta try and rehome my cat again 😢 she’s autistic, even for a cat, doesn’t know how to make friends with other cats, and ends up annoying them, and needs to be solo, or be with someone who has the time to work with her.
I’m asking around, but anyone that wants a cat, has a cat, good vibes for

Wow seven is out of the imagination library age. Is she in school? I didn’t become a real reader until around the 4th grade when I found The Babysitters Club books. Hopefully she’s at least getting exposure in school.

I have one friend whose girls are kind of opposite in my conerns. They go to a private school. When I asked if she was interested in my book party she told me the girls got their summer reading lists from school and she didn’t think they would have time for fun reading!! I can’t believe that is an approach! I’m all for summer reading; but to have so much that it leaves no time for pursuing a book just for the fun of it sounds awful to me. That sounds like it would have the opposite effect on a lot of kids.

The reason I go for the books I had a party for is that they have a lot of real quality non-fiction for kids. DS especially isn’t a big fiction reader yet. But he’ll sit with books on machines, history, etc. They are more motivated to learn when they get to follow their interests to a degree. Which is why DS is hiding in the garage right now instead of writing a journal entry about what he would do if he was the president.:rolleyes2:

They must need a community sponsor. Ours was sponsored by the town chamber of commerce. My niece in another state passed on a book to us and it was sponsored by something completely different. It was on the label every month. Maybe some group will do that in your area as things improve. That’s really a bummer! We found some fun new titles because of them!

She started kindergarten a year late (of course ), and has been in virtual school since last September. I'm hoping she can actually GO to school for first grade, not just for the sake of her education, but also because she needs to be able to get away from her mom and experience a life outside her home.
