These are the euthanization %s for shelters in Virginia that euthanized 76%-100% of dogs or cats or both in 2006. This isn't even a complete list as many shelters haven't reported their numbers yet but as you can see, even with what has been reported, it is incredibly sad:

a shocking and very very sad reality check - certainly something I will pass on to friends or family - even though the figures are not for my country - we all know the figures are going to be pretty much the same across the world

we all need to keep passing the message on about spay and neuter and support where ever and what ever we can do

Heartbreaking.

I see so many people posting with kittens on craigslist and I just cry knowing that most of them will end up as one of these statistics.

Do you know of a TNR group in Richmond that I might be able to get involved in? I volunteer for a rescue/adoption group but they don't do anything like that, just pull from the kill shelter.

Oh my gosh, I had no idea the percentages were that high... It really sickens me.
I wish more people would realize how important it is to fix their pets..
All future cats I own will either from shelters or strays/ferals like my Frisco was.

If you ever wonder why some of us jump all over people that come into TCS wanting to have their cat experience having a litter, this is why. It is very hard to bite your tongue and be polite sometimes.

This is typical in many areas of the country and why I've switched support from an individual no-kill shelter to No More Homeless Pets, which is a national advocate for spay/neuter.

No one in a shelter wants to euthanize animals but with society not supporting them, what options do they really have? It's a sad commentary on the values in our society today.

I just went to the website of one shelter that is marked having a 100% euth rate. They adopt out cats, so I don't get that number/figure.

Right now our euth rate for cats is in the 90%. This is because we are averaging 90 animals a day and adopting 10-15 a day.

Do the math.
