The little things I like about my cat

Max doesn't just answer when I call him by walking or running over. He'll "sneak" around so he can do a dramatic hop to land in front of me and Make An Entrance. Even if he's already right in front of me. I have to wait for him to circle and pounce into view. If I'm laying in bed or on the floor he'll make a point of going behind me and jumping over my side.

He seems to enjoy the illusion of stealth, so I make sure to say "uh-oh, where is he" and act surprised when he shows up all proud.

Oh I know this!! It usually happens juuust as I’m drifting off to sleep. I let out a squeak. It’s definitely a game, but I makes me glad he’s small.

Waking up 30 minutes before our alarm goes off to Suva purring loudly between us in bed. Not only does she pur, she also kneads and suckles anything she can get her paws into. Like my night shirt and feeling little needles in my side...followed by a cold wet spot touching me after she purred away to another spot to knead and suckle

Capsules. Whatever didn't originally come in a capsule (prednisilone and ondansetron), I repack those into gelatin capsules so she never has to taste her meds. Sunday mornings I spend about 20 minutes or so chopping up her pred and ond and making up the capsules for the week.

I think she pretty much has figured out how to take a capsule without biting into it now because at least one of those capsules literally tastes like . Because it is! AnimalBiome's Gut Restore Supplement is dried cat poop from carefully screened healthy donors. I saw her face once when she bit into it. I have not seen that face again.

I'm the weird one at the vet office asking for pills when they offer a liquid.

I know an animal biome donor! And I feel extremely strange being proud of it.

I'm actually not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did. For all the scooping I do, I'm in the wrong business.

We have a mutual no-wake policy. Betty doesn't wake me up at night, or in the morning. Amazing! I know! And I don't wake her when sometimes I just want to snuggle the stuffing out of that lazy Garfield. I figure if she can hold off, then I suppose I can too. It's not like she leaves me a scarcity of snuggle opportunities. If she's not sleeping, she's down for snuggles and cuddles. Always!

We also don't sleep together. She spends part of every night and sometimes part of mornings too sitting on my shoulder and laying her head on my chest while I lay on my back for her. I'm a side sleeper. So I try to give her as much time as I can before my back starts to hurt or I want to go to sleep. Then I gently nudge her as I begin to roll to a side and she picks any of a number of sleeping spots: her half of the bed (demarcated by the softest blanket, folded into a rectangular for her), her corner cloud (an ottoman with blankets in the corner between the bed and the bookcase), her floof poof, the daybed in the office, or recently, her new carrier has become a favorite hangout of hers. I don't know if that's going to hold once she's gone to the vet office in it. But for now, she loves it! If she's going to wait for me come to bed (she's had enough of lap time after dinner), or if she's waiting for me to wake up, she's often doing it from inside the carrier.

The manners on this cat! I didn't teach her these things.

Sometimes I sing (to the Scooby Do melody), “Betty Betty Boo, where are you? I’m waiting for your cuddles” as I’m waiting for her to come up to my shoulder/chest.

Despite working from home, we've settled into a division of labor that works quite well for both of us most of the time.

During the day, she sleeps and eats and generally gets the front room all to herself. I work away in the home office with the door open. She checks in on me maybe two or three times a day. She sits at the open door and watches me. If I swivel my chair towards her (even if my eyes are still on the screen), that's enough that she'll come in for loving fuss. But if I simply keep working, she may meow a time or three. But she does get it, and mopes on out. She'll check on me later. When I do break for her, I'll get down on the floor for her because she doesn't come up to the desk. She doesn't come up on the desk and she doesn't sit in front of the keyboard. Who taught this cat manners? Bravo! I come down to the floor and give her the business: ears, cheeks, chin, back, booty, belly, and chest--the only bad touch for Betty is the one that ends too soon! When it's time to go back to work, I give her a few more kisses and then go back to the chair. She understands that and slinks back to her day job.

I can expect two or three of these health checks a day. Although her timing isn't always great, she's always good with my time. If I can't break, she usually won't push the point. It's only when we get close to dinner time that she will be a little more forceful with her checks. She still won't come onto the desk. But she'll sit either at my feet or on the daybed next to the desk, and sing for a meal.

She's Pavlov trained to the sound of the microwave timer. I cook things like soup or breakfast potatoes that is a set the timer and come down and fuss the cat. Wherever she is, when she hears those microwave beeps to set the timer, she comes to the edge of the kitchen to wait for me to fuss her up. She will happily take those fuss sprints. When my potatoes are done, and I crack the eggs into the pan, she knows I'm not coming back for another fuss sprint. That's often when she'll go snack from her plate while she's waiting for me to finish cooking. Unless it's lunch which I take at the desk, she will sit in my lap while I'm eating and has never once expressed interest in my food.

Awwwwwwww. “Betty the Busker.” It’s too bad about our backs, isn’t it? Were it not for my lower spine, I’d happily lie on my back all night to accommodate my kitty. Perhaps in a million years from now, human anatomy will have upgraded itself.
