Happy Birthday and Happy Forever Day to all of our October kitties!

October has been a very special month here these last seven years, since five new kitties have joined the Family! Last year, Mirò showed up here - an obvious stray and not a feral cat - just about at death's door, weighing less than five pounds. She's been the easiest cat ever (with a little help from White Tip) to socialise - since the moment she came in on October 5th - and she's a joy every day.

Three years ago, on October 24th, Black Friday - one of the wildest feral cats I've even known - came in from the cold, and three days later, with the help of a neighbour, we trapped her Daughter, Clawed-Ya as well. Both were untouchable for quite nearly six months, until they moved from the chicken coop into their own Cat Palace, where they suddenly seemed to understand that they were safe and Loved.

That brings us to Hallowe'en, seven years ago, when White Tip - who'd lived years outside as a feral cat - and her young Son, Oz, came in on a blustery night, on October 31st. I've known a great many feral cats over the course of sixty-four years, but White Tip was the wildest of them all, and no one believed that she'd ever be an house cat.

“Amor vincit omnia," wrote Virgil at the closing of the tenth and final Ecologue, "et nos cedamus amori;" "Love conquers all, and to Love we must yield." The first couple of years inside, White Tip's almost-menacing posture said, "don't you dare ever touch me." Now, seven full years inside, when I pick her up and hold her, her posture says, "don't you dare ever let me go."

I see a lot of people posting on here because they're having trouble connecting with a shy/skittish new adoptee, and I think it's important to spread the word that time and love will make these the very best and most loving cats of all.

Etarre - You're absolutely right, and there are countless success stories which really should be shared on TCS, so that other members might find some hope for their own former ferals. I'll take the opportunity here to remind everyone who has a story to share that there's a TCS thread devoted to the subject - and that every shared tale has the ability to bolster the confidence of other member who are just beginning their journey to help feral cats:

Etarre I love what you said. You are so right that word needs to be spread about ferals being very loving cats who will adapt happily to indoor life. October was the birth month for 5 of the precious kittens I pulled in from outside. Their parents were feral and eventually ( months later) I did bring them in but I began with the babies. I am still in touch with their adopting families and they had great first birthdays. They are all housecats now. Pampered and loved, they are all happy inside. Here are Harlequin, Domino, Churchill, Theater and Shakespeare. I have 15 full time resident, previous, ferals. Many dozens of ferals have come here for socialization and now lead happy and tame lives in great homes. We could post here on the birthday thread for about a third of the year. Lol In fact I can post here again tomorrow! I bonded with each one and miss them terribly. Happy birthday to all my fur babies!

Hello everyone. We send Happy Birthday wishes to all born this month, born there, adopted or rescued! Love, health and happiness to ALL!
Here are some rescues I am remembering and missing who just celebrated their first birthday.
Raised at first without their Mom they were reunited with her a little later. Mom was originally feral but socialized and became a wonderful and loving inside kitty. All have been adopted.

Her history was unknown, other than that she was rescued and brought to the shelter by a woman who saw her being kicked by kids. Poor Ruby arrived at the shelter with broken upper canine teeth (which had to be extracted) and a wobbly eye. She also was not spayed. They guesstimated her age at 2 or 3.

Once they got her all fixed up, she was ready for someone to bring her home, and that someone was me.
Adopting Ruby was without a doubt the best decision I ever made.

Happy 2nd birthday, Flash! I looked to see if Nov. 2 was a Monday (to explain the closed eyes), but no, it was a Friday. Perhaps a long week? Resting before the big birthday bash?
