I went up to the garden tonight...and found these. The ones in the bottom picture don't have stems on, so I need to use them. Tomorrow, I'll bake and puree them for the freezer. I may set a cup or so of puree aside for more butternut crescent rolls to bake on Thursday. The ones with stems will go down to the basement and I'll use as I go this fall and winter. One butternut is enough for Rick and me.
There are 24 here. Probably another dozen or so in the garden that need to ripen a bit. And I've pureed six from the last batch I cut. Rick told me to get only ONE plant. But well, you know me. I had to get two.
Carmen peppers ripening in the back.

So, we're looking for a tree for our front yard. We think we want, specifically, a Toba hawthorn. It looks like this in Spring.

From what I've read, it's mostly thornless and might not produce that many berries even. I know some varieties of hawthorns can be kind of unpleasant. Anyone have one of these?

Our garden is pretty much done in I'm afraid. We have kale left, and a few beets.I think he said there were a couple of tomato plants left, but we've had such a horrid time with the wildlife this year...never this bad in years passed.I did get cucumbers and zucchini before the critters did, the first batches of beets, and the butternuts were saved.Such a disappointment...praying for better luck next year!
