Our cat was given covenia on Thursday because he had a red mark on his chin and swelling. However, there still appears to be a bump on his lip and redness on his chin even after 2-3 days. See pic, right in the center of his bottom lip.

Is this normal for the healing to take a while, or does it mean the covenia is potentially not working/ another intervention is needed? The swelling at least seems to be the same or even down a little. Just want to have a plan since it’s the holiday weekend and regular vet won’t be open until Tuesday.

Did the vet say the area is infected? Covenia is a long-acting antibiotic, so it might take more than a couple of days to help. Do you or the vet know what caused this? Did the vet call it an indolent or rodent ulcer, perhaps even an eosinophilic granuloma (dfferent names for the same condition)? The most common cause is using plastic bowls that can harbor bacteria, even when frequently cleaned, because of how porous the plastic is. If that were to be the case, switching to ceramic or stainless-steel bowls might solve this becoming a potential ongoing problem.

Sometimes the cause is more allergy based, such as a food intolerance, or other forms of allergies, such as environmental. Often times the treatment involved is Prednisolone rather than an antibiotic, but the latter can be used in conjunction if the area has become infected.

If the bowls could be the problem, change them out and then keep an eye on it until you can ask the vet some questions on Tuesday.
