We rescued a cat about 3 years ago. He's and indoor outdoor cat. This week he started acting afraid to come in the house. He would scratch at the front door to be let in, only to just stand there and seemed to be afraid to come in. I would bring him in, he would eat a little and the want to go right back out. He normally comes in at night in until morning when he eats and goes out. Last night he did not come in. He was at the door in the morning but would not come in, so I put food out and he ate there. He did not come to the door all day today, normally he comes in and out at least 2 or 3 times a day. Tonight I carried him in from the driveway, content in my arms until I got close to the porch, buit was able to get him in. He wanted out as soon as I put him down. Was able to get him to east some wet food, before he was at the door again. Any suggestions on what might be the issue. He was fixed when we adopted him. The only other thing I can think of is I gave him a dose of Advantage a few days ago.

I can't see any reason that Advantage would cause something like this, UNLESS he just flat hated it, and you put it on him inside the house. If that's the cause, he should get over it in a few more days. Let's try an experiment. Next time you dose him, do it outside, then bring him in. See if that causes a reaction.

Is someone else nearby feeding him?
Many folks in our neighborhood feed the outside cats. I only see him at the houses on either side if ours, and I don't think they feed the cats.

I did give it to him in the house.

No big changes, I'd say no changes at all. Just his behavior.

There's been some kind of change. He recognizes something is different, even if you don't see it. I hope you can get to the bottom of it. If you really think there is no change behind this, then I'd recommend a full-blown vet checkup.

In his own way, he is trying to tell you something - I'd pay attention to that if I were you.

My first thought was ‘something on the inside.’ It may not even be something you’d immediately think of. New perfume? Cleaning supplies? Weird neighbors? Something going bump in the night?

Thanx, I'll do some thinking on this...
