Hello! Need to hide half a powdered prednisone tablet in wet food every other day that my furbaby Gabi would eat. Crave chicken pate is discontinued and only 1.5 containers left, enough for five days. Sheba brand she would not touch. Have Wellness chicken pate, but not tried. Eats Taste of the Wild Venison and Salmon dry food.

Which wet foods are attractive to camouflage medicine? Finicky eater.

The vet had recommended Hill's Metabolic or Royal Canin Satiety Support for weight control, but don't want to complicate medicine giving.

Gabi, 6, licks/mows her stomach raw and red. Prednisone reduces itch. She is suspected to have asthma.

Is prednisone available as drops (like fish or chicken flavor?) Or get it compounded?

Newbie here, so forgive if not the appropriate forum to post this.

Live in San Jose, California, USA so something available here please.

I use a small amount of Delectable Lickables, in the stew flavors, a lickable treat to give medication to 3 cats every day. They have never turned it down. If you have only 1 cat you could refrigerate the leftovers and warm it slightly when giving. when I was giving Lasix every day to a cat with heart problems, I got Pill Pockets for cats, tore a small piece off of one of them, and 'cemented' the pill to a tiny piece of bacon or cheese, you could use what they really like, that worked well too. When giving medication, a tiny amount of something supposedly not good for them makes everything easier, better than not getting the meds. Unless they are severely allergic.

not sure how much this will help , but worked for me. My kitty , Bella was on 3 meds a day. 2 of them I had no problem with. one of them she HATED , and even though it was flavored (liquid) she would not eat it. no matter what food I put it in ! I would have to resort to forcing it on her (syringe down the throat) and she would hide if she saw me coming with it :frown: unpleasant for us both. then I found PUURRRFECT CREAMY .. a little tube of this creamy stuff made by the Temptations folks. comes in Tuna , Salmon or Chicken flavor. I call it " crack for kitties" I have yet to see one who doesn't love it ! I would put the liquid in a dish, add this & stir it up , and she gobbled it down in 2 seconds flat ! It was heaven ! I think you could put almost anything in this stuff and they would woof it down. LOL .. my sweet Bella crossed the rainbow bridge not long ago; I opened my home and 💕 to a new rescue kitty; This little one is a very picky eater .( Bella was not. she would eat almost anything that did NOT eat her first LOL) and even though my new sweetie turns down as much stuff as she will accept to eat , she begs for this creamy stuff. no fuss there ! Good luck .. I know this frustration well !! :goodluck:

Have you tried Pill Pockets or something similar to hide a pred pill in? One of my cats takes half a pred pill daily and I use a bacon flavored pill dough to give it to him.

Yes, you can get the pred compounded into another form such as a transdermal gel or flavored chew treat. Any compounding pharmacy can do this. Wedgewood Pharmacy is a popular web site many pet owners use to get compounded medicine. Wedgewood Pharmacy has several options for prednisoline: Prednisolone Medication & Information for Animals Not sure why other medicines also show up in the search result. Compounding can be expensive. If the pred is only for a short period of time, it may not be worth the expense and you're better off trying one of the tips linked above instead.

Gabi, 6, licks/mows her stomach raw and red. Prednisone reduces itch. She is suspected to have asthma.

Did the vet diagnose the cause of the itch? Asthma wouldn't cause it. Pred does help with asthma, though. Food allergies / sensitives can cause itchy skin and so can environmental allergies.

The vet had recommended Hill's Metabolic or Royal Canin Satiety Support for weight control, but don't want to complicate medicine giving.
For the itching? Weight control food won't help with skin itching at all. Those two brands may contain ingedients that can exacerbate itching if the cause is food related.

Did the vet do any blood work?

If your vet isn't giving you any clear diagnosis or answers, seek out another vet who will find the cause of the itching. A veterinary dermatologist may be helpful and there are allergy tests that can be done.

Have you looked for Nutro or Iams chicken pate perfect portions? They are both similar to Crave. Also, there are a ton of lickable treats that might work, in addition to the one mentioned above - Vitakraft, Inaba Churu, Wholehearted, Tiki Cat Stix, to name a few. If none of those work, try baby food meat (Gerber Stage 2 or Beechnut).

You can call a compounding pharmacy to ask if Pred can be compounded and with what. Wedgewood Pharmacy comes to mind, but I am sure there are others.

May sound odd, but my two go crazy for canned pumpkin and even eat it off a spoon for me. It is plain canned pumpkin not pumpkin pie filling.Might be worth a try, you can freeze the unused portion.

Thank you so much for the splendid suggestions! I will definitely try the compounding pharmacy as she has been on this medicine for two and half years and for the foreseable future.

I will definitely try Delectable Lickables. So I powder the pill and put it in the liquid and offer it to the kitty? Other flavors if it doesn't work: 5 Best Lickable Cat Treats - Aug. 2021 - BestReviews.

Definitely will try Nutro and Iams.

LTS3, thank you so much for the thought-provoking questions.

"Did the vet diagnose the cause of the itch? Asthma wouldn't cause it. Pred does help with asthma, though. Food allergies / sensitives can cause itchy skin and so can environmental allergies."
== She sees a dermatologist. Diagnosed with Atopy and "Hypotrichosis of the caudoventral abdominal region with subtle erythema" Had to take to the emergencey two years ago as made the stomach red and a little bloody. The emergency doctor referred to the dermatologist. Now the dermatologist has moved out of the area so sees another at the same clinic. Gets bloodwork done every six months, I guess for keeping track of prednisolone effects and to make sure the glucose is not too high to track if gets diabetes. I was actually thinking of taking her to a cat hospital to a generalist as the skin specialist has not been doing anything special, but routine followup; charging tons of money which is not covered by the insurance with a $500 deductible. Luckily Gabi is stable and hasn't needed to visit the hospital for panting.

Hill's Metabolic or Royal Canin Satiety Support is for weight control, prednisolone makes her hungry and she has gained weight. But I read it doesn't fill them up and keeps them hungry.

"Those two brands may contain ingredients that can exacerbate itching if the cause is food related."
Thank you. Read also that chicken can cause itching.

"Did the vet do any blood work?" yes, every six months.

" A veterinary dermatologist may be helpful and there are allergy tests that can be done. "
She had them in the first meeting I think, and now it's follow up. I will seek out other pet dermatologists if her situation gets worse. I don't like the prednisolone, the steroid, which can mess up her health.

In the past, the pill hiders haven't worked. Maybe I didn't do it right. Will give another try.

Latest: I was cruel and gave her no dry food, only the Wellness chicken pate for three hours, finally she ate it. To be seen if she will eat it tonight.

How does one remove allergens from the environment? We have no other cat, she is indoors, we give her only cat food, no milk or eggs. Which foods are least allergenic? What do people whose cats have allergies do here?

Thank you profusely for all the suggestions! I did not even know all the help was waiting for me here! I was expecting an email notification! Lazy me!!

Lots of vacuuming and dusting might help. Frequent changing of air filters is another thing to try. Also, you might consider an air purifier, perhaps even a humidifier if your home is dry.
Thank you! Yes, just got an air purifier this year. All the fires in California have been driving the particulate matter up.

Gabi sheds a LOT, so some of the dust is her own doing!

Has anyone tried aromatherapy where you plug in scented oils in the outlets or fernomes? Do they cause their own allergies?

Good News! The wellness chicken pate is finally palatable for Gabi and actually she is begging for more! No more medicine woes! Thank you every body.

Many scented oils are very bad for cats and any could well make the allergies worse. From experience with people, any respiratory allergy can be irritated by adding anything to the air. Aim for clean. As FeebysOwner FeebysOwner said vacuum and dust a lot, but when you dust use the vacuum or a damp cloth, not a duster, Also look behind bookshelves, chests, all furniture to be sure you don't have mold growing on the backs of the pieces.

Remember every time you go outside and return you bring dust and pollen with you. You may also want to consider whether or not your shampoo and soap irritate her allergies. Try to find the simplest, unscented versions of everything - shampoo, soap, laundry detergent you can. Another note - no washing machine can actually get all the soap out of your laundry. We do a second spin/rinse with 1/4 cup of white vinegar in it to get as much of the soap out of the clothes and sheets as possible. Hope this helps.
