I'm SO sorry to hear about Mama. Just remember how much better you made her life....and the other 12,000 kitties you've helped along the way ;) She definitely learned what it was like to not live with the feeling of thirst, hunger, or loneliness from lack of love because of your amazing journey with all of these fur balls!

Know that all of our furry loved ones - both inside and outside ferals - will get extra treats tomorrow in her honor. I hope you know how much I (and I'm sure MANY others on this site) am a fan of your amazing "tail" (I couldn't resist!) and all of those who have benefitted from it, whether it's to give me a laugh....teach me a new bit of cat behavior I'd never experienced in my way-too-many-years of caring for and about kitties.....sometimes make me shed a tear alongside you in joy or sadness..and periodically shake my head in frustration right along with you, as you've taken SO much on in such a short period of time.

So know that at our house tonight, we're thinking of Mama, of you, and of everyone else (furry and non-furry) at your house. And let your furry ones comfort you. You've done so much. I'm sure Mama's proud!

I'm so sorry to hear you lost Mama. I'm sure he'll be missed, he sounds like he was quite a character. (A male cat called Mama could hardly be anything else)

How are all your other cats doing? Is the construction around you place finished now?

Thank you all!

The others are doing really well. Junior and Morgan have taken to treating my wife as a kitty bed no matter where she is/what she's doing. They've also become playmates, chasing each other around the apartment like a couple daredevils. Scotty still gets "beat up on" by both of them - nothing aggressive; Junior ambushes him whenever he can and the little miss walks up to him, gives him a sniff, meows her disapproval, and swats at him... even when he's sleeping. Scotty takes it all in stride though, immediately "surrendering" to every confrontation (the opposite of what he used to do in the wild).

Julius is a bit of a mixed bag. As I was typing this he was aggressively demanding pets, trying to squeeze himself under my arms and headbutt me until I pet him. Once I did he settled into my lap like the sweet boy he is. Other times he'll still have fear reactions - like he thinks I'm going to attack him. He'll hide under the coffee table and sprawl out when this happens so we just let him have his space. Before long he's back up on the bed demanding more pets. He's also gotten fluffy - he hasn't quite realized he doesn't need to bulk up for winter anymore.

The colonies are shrinking. One is gone entirely and the other half the cats have been taken into foster care. There's a couple new abandons on the scene we need to trap but overall it's under control. Soon we'll have to start looking for new colonies

That they do. This one is going to be trouble though... goes from purring like crazy to instantly hissing when it sees another one of our cats. I'm pretty sure I know which litter he's from (yes it's a he) - two other feral black cats around his age (brother and sister) were trapped not too long ago. We'll keep an eye out for lost kitten signs but I'm pretty sure he's feral (very underweight).

He doesn't mind being picked up and fell asleep on our bed right away. He must be exhausted after all the rain we've had in the past few days. He'll be off to the vet in the morning... just have to figure out a name before then.

I really need a new phone - such a crappy camera.

Edit: I'm starting to think the feral thing might have been a hasty conclusion. I put him in our bedroom so he could get used to me while I slept. Before I could get there though the sounds of the other cats scratching at the door scared him. He immediately climbed onto my chest and fell asleep. He's been there for hours, chasing imaginary mice, snoring, and farting up a storm.

Wow - what a beautiful black panther kitten :lovecat: I am so glad that he is safe with you. It is so hard to say if he is a stray, or a discard, or a victim of sabotage (like some people sneakily get rid of their aging parent's pets :argh:). He certainly is a gorgeous boy - are his eyes green?

Hi JMJimmy JMJimmy :wave3:

I was just thinking it's about time I updated my thread and wondered if you were going to do the same. You beat me to it!

What a lovely cat. It's good that you're now known as the "cat people" in the neighbourhood. Well, I mean it's probably going to result in a lot more lost or unwanted cats finding their way to your house, but good for the cats, right?

:purr:

He sounds like he's been socialised already, so might be suitable for re-homing one day. How are all your other cats doing? Is all the construction work finished now?

Hey Nora!

Things are going well. Julius has finally settled in - he's my best bud now. He's taken to kneading my stomach and loves settling down under my arm as I type. Everyone is healthy as they can be and happy. Scotty's stomatitis is to the point where he's starting to swallow food whole and still has chronic diarrhea for no apparent reason (tests are all negative). It doesn't seem to bother him though as he's fat, happy, and full of beans. Junior is becoming a suck and Morgan is sassy as ever.

AlphaKitty got a big promotion so things are finally on the way up. Construction on the building is done but they didn't put our patios back and we're coming up on 1 year of litigation over it. Construction is all around us though with buildings on all sides undergoing construction and a new underground train tunnel being dug. It's looking like we'll be under construction for at least the next decade lol

As I predicted he's going to be trouble.

I was about to take him to the vet when I did a quick scout for lost cat signs. I found one, unfortunately it's from the same people who turned Junior out when he started meowing at the door.

Now they've allowed a 8-10 week old outdoors, in a storm, and lost him. I am horribly conflicted at what to do here.

Don't be. KEEP HIM. Keep him in, of course. Those people are not qualified to properly care for cats.

That's my feeling... from what I can tell they put up one sign, inside the building, and are currently watching soap operas instead of looking for their missing kitten.

On the other hand, am I looking for reasons to justify keeping him? For all I know he got out unintentionally and there was no neglect just circumstance. If he were my kitten and scooted out the door without me noticing, I would want him back. Then again my cat would be chipped and I wouldn't rest until he was found. Do I have a right to apply my standard of care to them?

Our policy was that any cat who came into our yard got a vet checkup, innoculations, spay/neuter, and adopted by us or in the case of some very small kittens born to one of the "community" cats we had not yet earned the trust of, rescued by someone I trusted who did rescue/adoptions. As far as I'm concerned, it's irresponsible to let cats out, period, end of story. If he got out mistakenly, that's another matter, but I would not gamble on that. I would adopt him.

I decided the right thing to do was to go and find out the circumstance.

I spoke with the owner and they bought two cats 5 days ago, which is why they aren't chipped/vetted yet. He got out through a hole under the balcony that they blocked off but the piece of wood got moved while she was cleaning.

They didn't know the sex (she said it was female), the cats could easily climb out of the balcony (ground floor), and while I was speaking with her the other one scooted out the door on her. Half of me wanted to grab the other one and leave, the other half says they're kittens getting into whatever trouble they can.

I'm thinking the right thing to do is to have a conversation with them, give him back, with the understanding that if either cat ends up in my care again, they will be staying with me permanently.
