I have two cats, a tiny adult spayed female and a giant male kitten. Both have lived together happily for six months even as the male outgrew the female. We live in an apartment with no other nearby cats. They never go outside.
He was always dominant over her, even as a small kitten - he's very outgoing and boisterous. As he got older he'd occasionally get randy and "try it on" with her so we decided to get him neutered this week. We dropped him off at the vet in the morning then came home and we noted that she was in quite a good mood and was very exploratory and friendly and we joked that she was enjoying life without him. We brought him home from the vet at lunch time.
He was a little dazed and traumatized by his experience so he was skulking around the corners. And then She, half his size, started stalking him. She'd jump out at him from behind corners and hiss and swipe at him. He was still kind of timid and would run off which we'd never seen before. She even chased him away from his food bowl.
It's been a few days and she's still treating him like a stranger. He's more or less back to normal with us, running and chasing things but every time he goes near her by accident, at meals or even just for a friendly nuzzle she swats him. She looks permanently angry.
It's really odd because he was only out of the house for a few hours and he's pretty much behaving the same as he used to, minus the occasional sexual aggression. We thought they'd get along better post-neutering, not worse.
Any idea why this could be? Could his smell have changed already? Is she trying to establish a new world order?
