Dear Friends,

As some of you may remember, my beautiful cat Holly was diagnosed with oral squamous cell carcinoma back in February. She went through mandibulectomy surgery in March and was recovering super well.
Unfortunately the cancer is back. We have been lucky to find good doctors willing to try a fairly new protocol with stereotactic radiation and Palladia.
I am aware that this will not cure her and that this is to give her a few more months of life. She is still very active and social and that’s why we have decided to give it a try.
Has anyone had experience with this new protocol?

I read about Palladia awhile ago and saw that it was a promising new treatment, but I can't remember where I read about it. I have no experience, but I'm sending you prayers and support. Since this is a new treatment, you never know....she may get more than a few months :)

You could try joining this group and asking your questions there - [email protected] | Home. If there is another group within this broad group that is closer to your situation, I think they could tell you. I just thought it might be worth a shot since all the folks who have joined this group are specifically dealing with cancer, and not the wide array of subjects on this site.

I have never used it, but in the dog world it is used for a number of cancers. As I recall, it is not chemotherapy, but a drug that prevents angiogenesis or growth of new blood supply to the tumor and is usually used indefinitely. I think that stereotactic radiation is the same as, or similar to gamma knife technology which is also used in humans at many major cancer centers. I have a friend who had that (for himself) at Stanford and, as I recall, there were minimal side effects. Palladia is noted to have a fairly high percentage of side effects, so have that discussion with your vet.

If she is active and happy, I can see your point in trying to continue on for as long as possible.:redheartpump::hugs:

I don't know that protocol, but I heard of Palladia.

My cat was prescribed palladia for her carcinoma, but I decided not to proceed due to the side effects of the drug. I seeked a second opinion after the oncologist advised me about Palladia, and talked to another oncologist who said he wouldn't have gone down that path, just like I thought.

At the shelter where I often go, a couple of cats with carcinoma where treated with Palladia, but this didn't change the outcome much for those two cats.

I don't have anything to offer other than support from a distance. My boy was diagnosed with oral squamous cell carcinoma October 2021 and it was deemed terminal by multiple specialists. It's tough. I wish you the best with the time you and Holly have left. My only advice is to photo and video EVERYTHING!!
