You are still very early in your grieving process. It takes at least two years to even come to terms with the pain. You are not alone, though each of us grieves in our own way because each loss is so personal and ours alone. I lost my little girl ten years ago and still cry when i think of her. Its too easy to lose yourelf to the pain, its much harder to learn to live with it. But life is for the living, and i know my Chrissy would want me to be happy. Just as your Sonic wants for you. Hold on to Jakey, he needs you too, just as my three need me. Love is neverending, and our hearts are big enough to share.....

Just to be absolutely clear (and this is something I can smile about now), Sonic would have HATED Jakey having me to himself. Sonic was extremely dominant and probably fair to say a bit of a bully. Sonic let Jakey sit on my lap with him, but he was in charge.

Jakey wouldn't go near Sonic's favourite spots (except my lap, which he eagerly took up in Sonic's absence) at home for 7 months - so up until a couple of weeks ago, that is how long it took him to - I guess feel that those places had been vacated long enough for him to risk it? I hope that he has not forgotten Sonic though. Although Sonic owned certain sleeping places here and was kind of in charge, they were best buddies and pretty much inseparable for 14 years - I don't want Jakey to be upset by Sonic's absence any longer (he was at first), but I don't want him to forget Sonic either.

A couple of days ago I found the strength to listen to an audio recording I made of him - he was very vocal and the day before he died he wanted to wander around all his places in our home, I followed him around because he was quite weak by that point and I felt escorting him was only right in case he got too tired - but he still had a big voice and a lot to say and kept up conversation with me throughout his last patrol of his territory - so I hit the record button on my phone.

Playing it back just had me in absolute floods of tears again. I miss my little one every single day. I don't necessarily cry every day now, but sometimes something will set me off remembering him and I will have a cry.

Love him and miss him so much. And Radar my other one who died a couple of years ago, he is never far from my thoughts either. I still have Jakey for now and he is a real comfort to me.
I am glad you have Jakey, when one of mine goes the others always help me 🤗

It takes some strength. Sometimes I try to listen to the recordings of my past kitties, but often I had to cut it short, because it's too painful.
Sometimes I find very painful to look at those photos, especialy the photos taken a few days/weeks before their death.

I hear you.
I took a photo of Sonic in the hour before we went for his final vet visit. I did think it would be difficult for me to look at subsequently, but I wanted a record of him at that point - and it's actually, and somewhat surprisingly, been a comfort - he looks unwell and very frail, but it puts paid to any doubt that I did the right thing by him that day. If I wonder whether I might have made the wrong decision, I look at that photo and it comforts me. Because although he looks unwell and frail, as well as reminding me that I that I did the right thing (when he needed me most), it is also the last bit of time we had together at home - he was (and still is) my darling little boy and every image of him is sweet and precious, even if he wasn't at his best. I have plenty of great photos of him in the full bloom of health too.

It would have been my darling Sonic's 16th birthday, he was born on 1st November 2006.
I am going to find today difficult.
There is not a day goes by that I don't think about him and miss him and feel pain about his loss and cry.

I love you Sonic.

From every picture you’ve ever posted on this site, I can tell just how much Sonic was loved. I don’t know what rituals you have if any, to ease the pain, but on the day of my father’s passing, I go to where his ashes are scattered, raise a wee dram in his honor, sip it, and pour the rest to the ground. Others I know write notes to their loved ones and send them down streams. Hopefully the ache will one day ease in your life and you can just curl up, in all of the warm memories. …You might have said, somewhere, but how did Sonic get his name? (You don’t have to say). :hearthrob:

It's actually nothing very spectacular - we had another cat who we got a few months before, he was half moggie half Cornish Rex and he had the most ridiculously large upright ears, I took one look at him and said his name is Radar (he sadly died too, well we had to have him put down due to a brain tumour in 2020). Then a few months after we got Radar we went to visit Sonic, he was actually going to be named Lucien by his breeder but I wanted a sciency/techy sounding name for him to go with Radar - so we asked for him to be called Sonic Boom and so that is how he got his name.
Then we got another cat, Jakey (also from Sonic's breeder) but he was an ex stud cat and a bit older and already answered to the name Jacob, so I couldn't rename him something to fit the science/tech theme and he is still just Jakey (and my only one left, he has fairly serious CKD now and is on medication for that to try to slow it down so we are currently making the most of the time we have left together).

You do a great job with names ! Yes, those anniversaries can be challenging. I work in pharmacy so I have to hear/see month and day of birth; there are certain dates that are tender spots in my heart. I know that you gave Sonic a wonderful life and I am glad that he was part of a wonderful family -exactly what we in cat rescue desire.

We mourne our passed away cats every day, but there are a few days along the year when the pain is stronger and tears roll down more easily.
It's an unbearable pain for all of us.
Happy birthday Sonic 🎈

Hugs to you. 🤗 lately I’m so numb from all of the trauma in my life that I cannot even remember the days that my kitties passed and there are so many of them. But it doesn’t stop me from thinking about them a lot and talking to them and still loving them and missing in them of course. I was just looking at one of my photos of my Wizard and telling him how much I missed him and wished he was here I say that almost every day to my five kitties who passed away and yet I have four boys now inside and one outside who I also love dearly.
I was just thinking what it is going to be like when my little Quinn leaves me, assuming I don’t die before him. And I thought it’s going to be the most devastating loss of all of them. Even though he is such a little monster at times lol. I don’t think I’m gonna go to those extremes anymore that I went to with my other kitties when it is their time I’m going to let them go because I don’t want them to suffer. That will probably make it even harder and there is also of the aspect of finances for 4 soon to be five cats.

The pain definitely intensifies on anniversaries such as this, and I have had ten years to mourn. It DOES get better with the passing of time. You finally realize that they are safe and warm and will be as close as your thoughts and prayers. Your memories will always bring a pang of regret and sadness, but try to remember the good that came too, the happiness and what they added to your life. Happy birthday precious Sonic!
