Shelter cat is broken and super depressed

Here's Cosette begging me to feed her this morning. She'll approach within a few feet but never close enough to touch.

Yep, the fact that she is showing you her belly means that she is beginning, at least, to trust you. She's getting there. I'll tell you this...when a cat like that actually gives you their whole heart, and she is beginning to, it is the most remarkable feeling in the world.

Cosette has learned that she's allowed to touch the furniture. Apparently she wasn't allowed to in her past life. It took her 7 months to work up the nerve to swat at the window blind. She's done it a few times since, as if to test us. This morning she stayed up for longer than usual and went around touching things.

AND, I'm crying. I cannot imagine a cat not being allowed to touch furniture. Why even bother having a cat? What a sad, restricted life she must have led, and how amazed she must be now. She's learning, thanks to you and your love and patience, how to be a cat, possibly for the first time in her life.
