So my cat was on metronidazole to treat his diarrhoea and it seemed to help at first but on day 7 he started having severe liquid diarrhoea that just explodes out of his ass. He still has a very good appetite and drinks a lot of water as well. But it’s like he can’t keep anything in.
I’m trying a lot of things and nothing helps even a little bit. I tried pumpkin, pectin, s boulardii and other over the counter stuff for it, fortiflora. He had diarrhoea 8 times today! He eats and drinks and then goes to the litter box, rinse and repeat. We went for a vitamin shot today and he made a huge mess at the vet. And yet we didn’t get any prescription or anything that could help.

Seeing another vet tomorrow and gonna ask for different tests, but we need to be able to harden his poop somehow while waiting for results and the vets here don’t seem to know how to handle this. Please help

I have been in a diarrhea nightmare. What I did on a VERY temporary basis, was boiled chicken breasts. I boiled it and then ground it up in my food processor. It was the only thing that bunged him up - and almost immediately. Makes sense because it's pure protein. I knew it wasn't a long term solution by any means as it isn't nutritionally balanced, but I would've tried anything to get the diarrhea to stop. It was all over the cat and my house. NIGHT. MARE. Of course, with the help of my vet, we found a food that didn't cause the GI issue and everything has been good since. This might be controversial, but I was desperate.

Not controversial at all! I’ve seen bland chicken diet recommended (sometimes mixed with rice) and considered offering him some, but not sure if chicken is something he’s allergic too. But maybe won’t harm to try it at least, I’m desperate at this point

Hi. You need to have a fecal PCR done to determine bacteria etc and check for Protozoa and any parasites. Talk to your vet about this. If your vet can’t help you or thinks this isn’t a big deal, ask for a referral to a specialist.
This is a big deal and left untreated can be life threatening.
Please don’t try to fix this with things at home. This isn’t that type of problem and you can potentially make things worse.
This could also be a bowel or intestinal obstruction.
When you had the vitamin injection, was it the doctor who gave the injection or a tech? If a tech, there is a chance the doctor isn’t aware.

Just to clarify, I am not a veterinarian and the above is what I would do if this was my cat. But, you do need to talk to your vet directly and if they can’t help get a referral

Of course we are going to the vet! But it’s impossible to get any times asap and we still have a day to wait until our visit at a new vet who’s supposed to be good with gut issues. I have to do something during the waiting time.

My boy had chronic diarrhoea for about 2 1/2 months last year and he purged like 8 - 12 times a day in a row. I gave him S. Boulardii and I follwed the instructions in this article :- my-cat-has-diarrhea---what-do-i-do.html

Chronic or severe diarrhoea does not resolve overnight. Keep giving him the S. Boulardii till his poo becomes firm again. The S. Boulardii helped my boy's chronic diarrhoea and has put his stool back to normal again. Now he is on a small dosage of S. Boulardii morning and evening to maintain his gut health.

I'm not a vet.

We re-tested his T4 and the value was very high, not at all like the one in May :O so it’s likely his thyroid causing the issues. We were cleared for EPI today too.
So back to methimazole, hypoallergenic dry food, mirataz if needed, Cerenia pills and Pred. The hope is still alive

Musiaka has crossed the rainbow bridge today after a long and courageous fight against his illnesses. The guilt and doubt is killing me right now, but he took a turn for the worst since yesterday and his emaciated little body just needed to finally rest. The pain is excruciating as most of you know. Thank you all for your comments throughout the years. I learnt a lot and tried to do my best but failed. Now I get to live without my soul cat. Goodbye

I am so sorry for your loss of such a wonderful little cat. I know this is so hard and it takes time, but I hope you can keep his memory alive in your heart. Memories of when he was healthy and happy. I wish there was something to say at this point to ease your pain, but I know there isn’t.

I am so sorry for your loss of Musiaka. Your continued posts here on TCS have been a testament to how much you cared for him and provided medical treatment. Please remember that we are here for you. You did the hardest and bravest thing that you could for him when his time had come and you both fought the good fight together.

Oh dear, we are so sorry to hear this and we are saddened by the news of her passing. You've done your best for him. You may want to pay a tribe to Musiaka and you may do so here in crossing-the-bridge.19

Hugs from all of us here at The Catsite

Thank you… you always commented on all of my posts ❤ I have been torturing myself so much and feeling like I’ve done so many mistakes. I made so many wrong choices and was all over the place with trying to control his symptoms, trying this, trying that… not trying long enough or persistent enough if it didn’t help right away. Relied too much of Pred despite the possible side effects. I wish I could have a redo, but there’s no redo.

I never for one second thought that you were doing the wrong thing. When there is a complicated issue like the one that faced Musiaka, trying various approaches is the only thing that can be done. I meant exactly what I said in the previous reply. You cared for Musiaka for years through all of the medical issues which arose and you fought them successfully for so long. I guarantee you that all the years he had since you joined TCS were because of your care. You extended his life as much as you could and many owners would have given up long ago.

You posted a lovely tribute to him in our Crossing the Bridge forum, so this thread will be locked out of respect for him. Please continue in the new thread as much as you would like.
