Thanks - I have tried this but my boy had an allergy to it unfortunately. He's very allergy prone for some reason.
I used to use one made from walnut a few years back, it might have been “naturally fresh”, and I was using Okocat wood cat litter for a while for Quinn, but I found that was even worse for my asthma. The best was when Quinn was using the Cat Genie and that has plastic cat litter in it so there was no dust. But then there were problems sometimes with it getting clogged and stuff.

Thank you! I didn't know plastic litter was a thing.

I'm going to try the paper litter and see how it goes.

Paper is a good idea. The plastic litter is only used in the Cat Genie, which is like a toilet bowl it hooks up to your plumbing or your toilet and it washes out and drains everything and then the litter is washed and it just stays there, etc..

Thar would be a funny thing, teaching my cat to use my actual toilet.

I tried with Angie and then again with Quinn as I recall. She did not want to poop in the kitty trainer thing on the toilet so I gave up but she would pee. I don’t really remember what happened with Quinn now though, it could be that I never tried with him because I could not rely on my family members to leave the toilet up, etc., with the cat training device and the bathroom door open.

But anyway, I trained him to use the Cat Genie which was Wizard’s. I had to put his regular litter box right next to it, and then stop cleaning it maybe. I have forgotten. I had planned to get him and Merlin back using it eventually, but then I never did because Merlin was very attached to his regular litter box, and by that point so was Quinn.

Wizard took to it with a little coaxing. He was using a Litter Robot before that which did not work well amd which got litter allover it. I ended up throwing it away after they replaced different parts. I think he liked the cat genie a lot better because it was very clean. He had early CRF, and he peed a lot so it made everything easier.

Then 2 years ago there was a flood from a leak in the cat genie tubing in my studio, spraying water all over the place. I had two plumbers come in to try to fix it and neither of them would do it. It was quite expensive getting it install because I had to put in a different water shut off switch underneath the sink in my studio.

it was strange because I hadn’t used it since I took Merlin in 2019. And I had turned it off at some point too.

So eventually we may get a new one if I ever go that route again. One of the plumbers said that he thought the tubing on the Cat Genie was broken and he could not replace that or something so I have to call the company. I know they have made a new variation of it now which is better.

The thing about the cat genie which was nuts was in order to clean cat litter out of the tubing, which clogged sometimes, I had to take it outside and swing the whole thing around because you couldn’t detach the tube from the base which was an insane design. I know that was changed in the new version.

I used to hand scoop the poop out of there because I was worried it would get clogged. Plus, if your cat has soft stool or diarrhea, it would be a lot harder to scoop it out with the plastic litter.

So overall training them to use a human toilet would probably be better if you can do that. I see a lot of people on Instagram that have done that and their cats seem OK with it. You would think the way my guys come in the bathroom with me that they would love using it, lol, but no, they seem to be terrified of it- Zena especially and he’s usually the one that comes in with me now.

The Cat Genie or a human toilet would also probably almost entirely eliminate the issue of possible spread of parasites through cat litter. Because there would be no litter with a toilet bowl, and with the Cat Genie the plastic litter gets washed and then dried with heat each cycle.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'm hoping the litter is the culprit, but I'm also worried now it may be his special prescription food as I've just seen it contains cereals!!! I may make a separate post on this to keep it on topic.. unless I can mention here.

As an update, I have slowly switched my cats litter from Catsan to the below brand:

Breeder Celect Recycled Paper Pellet Cat Litter | Pets

It's a lot lighter to carry for me, but the colour is dark so it's hard to see if he has urinated. It is very soft though and not much dust that I noticed. I'll keep you updated whether it helps his poor irritated paws... I'm also in the process of changing his diet too, so hopefully the combination of this and that will help my poor allergy prone baby boy...
