Hi,

It's been a while since I've posted here.

My cat 6 year old cat has started biting his back paws and causing them to bleed in between his toes. I have had him use a cone and treat them but once the cone was off, the issue has started again. He also bites at his front paws, but they seem fine and not bloody.

He has been to the vets and the vet said it could be an allergy. I asked if it could be his cat litter (Catsan non clumping) and she said no because it would also affect his front paws. I'm skeptical as to whether it could actually be his litter so I wanted to change it as a test to see if the issue stops, but I'm not sure what to change it to and what's safe. When he was a kitten, he developed an allergy to pine litter, which is why he changed to Catsan.

He is also on a special diet because he is prone to urinary blockages, Hills Urinary, Multi stress, Weight management wet food with he does not have treats, and I also put one scoop of Pro Pla Natural Defences in the wet food for his immune system so I'm not sure if anything there could trigger allergies?

Can anyone recommend a safe alternative cat litter that I could try? I am from the UK.

You can try Tofu Cat Litter. It’s made from food grade soy pulp and it’s non toxic.

My boy is using it.

When doing a search for Tofu Cat Litter, a brand called "KatKin Scoop Planet Litter" came up. Is this something that I can try? It says it's made from peas.

Yes, some are made from peas. There are many brands out there and some use peas and some use food grade soy pulp.

Do a search on which brand is more popular and with good reviews in UK.

my peanut is sensitive to litter and some foods, too. she gets itching, digging with litter. had bad reaction to flea treatment. I have found that using products with least amount of additives is best. For litter look for ones that say "No Dyes or perfume" here in US Tidy Cats free & Clear works best for her. Kibble I look for ones with no corn, wheat, soy. more natural, the better. Tiki Cat , here is pretty good. mostly trial and error. Good luck!

My cat is on a special prescription diet to prevent urinary issues so I don't have many options to change his food unfortunately, but I will see if there are any alternatives.

I can't find a safe tofu cat litter in the UK that doesn't have some form of scent. Unless I'm just looking in the wrong places. Can anyone recommend a good UK tofu cat litter brand? Most are vanilla / milk scented, which is a bit odd to me.

My cats use grass seed litter. Fresh 4 Life Eco-Grass Clumping Cat Litter - Pet Valu I dont know if its available in the UK though. Prior to that, I used standard clay litter and my cats kept sneezing. Since switching to grass litter years ago, the sneezing has stopped. There are multiple brands of grass litter, so hopefully there's one where you are in case you cant find unscented tofu litter.

I can't seem to find any grass type cat litters here. Only grass 'scented' stuff. Very bizarre. I thought they'd cater for allergy prone cats in the UK.

My two use enzymatic tofu litter, also made from peas. It's an Australian brand, not available elsewhere as far as I know, but I mention it because it also has the faint milky scent when opened. Doesn't seem to bother them. Tofu is good and soft on their feet (and mine, when they chuck it around!). My two absolutely refused to use pine pellets, and no wonder, they're so hard. Good luck sorting your boy's feet problem!

Thanks for this. I was concerned as I always thought scented products were a no in general.

I don't know if Yesterday's News is still available. It's a paper-based litter (Uses recycled newspaper) that has been popular around here for a while. Was good for rodents, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, and dogs. Controlled smell pretty good without scents. Our Humane society has used it, and a wheat-based cat litter for a long time. I wish I could remember the name of the wheat-based cat litter

I'm sorry that I can't help you with the UK brands. I guess you've just have to read the reviews and go with your instinct. Sometimes you'll get a good deal and sometimes you get bitten and so it's hard to buy things online which most of us are doing. Best is read the reviews.
It may work for some and nit work for some and so you'll get mix reviews but this is how it works. You never try, you'll never know.

There are many companies out there with many brands and the bulk of it is that the litter comes form a central manufacturer from a certain country/countries and dealers buy by the bulk and market it after re-branding and re-packaging it. So most retailers or even wholesalers get from some other source.

For all you know that many brands come from the same source.

We use worlds best cat litter which is unscented. It’s made from corn. It’s not clay. It does get a bit dusty though so I’ve been thinking of switching it because it affects my asthma, but I can’t find any other one that works for us. I don’t know if they have it in the UK. You might be able to order it on Amazon.

Thanks - I have tried this but my boy had an allergy to it unfortunately. He's very allergy prone for some reason.
