Hello,

My cat has long hair and is quite matted on the belly/chest area. He hates when i groom him. Therefore every 6 months i take him to the vet to get a lion cut/shave. He is always sedated as he gets stressed during the process. Last time he had a little cut and seemed in pain.

My question is can vets give him pain medicine afterwards just to make sure hes not in discomfort?

Is it safe for cats to be sedated and also take pain medication?

She has given me gabapentin before but is that for pain i read its more to help cats relax rather pain.

Usually, there should be no cuts in a sedated cat, the one doing the shaving was inexperienced or in too much of a hurry. Gabapentin is administered for chronic pain too, but a cut from a shave is acute and something else could be given. I would definitely ask about this the next time you are in. Hopefully, he won't be cut again!
