I want to make one this year but don't have a creative bone in my body.

I found a picture of this one that I REALLY like:

I want to start on her next weekend. I think one like that would be really pretty.

Should I carve the pumpkin then put it on a stake? How to keep it from rotting before Halloween if I do. What to stuff it with since no leaves have fallen yet.

That's an awesome scarecrow! Your idea sounds good, but I have no idea how you would preserve the pumpkin. Your can always use straw to stuff it, if you can find that kind of thing where you live...

If I was going to make a scarecrow with a pumpkin head, I would use a Funkin---one of those fake pumpkins. You can carve them just like the real thing and you won't have to worry about it rotting. Hobby Lobby and Joann Fabrics may already have them on sale.
Good luck with your project!

Thanks!! I was planning on going there to get the grapevine for the "scarf".
