I'm wondering what particular brands of S. boulardi are used and recommended by members here. I bought S. boulardi in capsule form (see link) from Amazon and was opening them and pouring them onto my cat's food. But, though they don't expire until 2025, I've noticed that the powder in the capsule has now become clumpy. It was not like that when I bought it originally. The information on Amazon says that the capsules don't need to be refrigerated. I'm wondering if the capsules are still okay to use, or, if I should buy a new bottle.

Hey there,
I know some folks here use Nexabiotic, so hopefully one of them will get back to you about the crumbliness of the capsule contents. I use Renew Life S Boulardii since the most popular brand, Jarrow, has tapioca starch in their S Boulardii. If tapioca starch doesn’t negatively affect your cat, then Jarrow is the most commonly recommended brand since it also contains MOS.

Thanks for your recommendation. :) Generally, I like Jarrow and trust their products for the supplements I take myself. But, if their brand throws in an extra ingredient like tapioca, I'd probably rather avoid it.

I would verify every recommendation given on this website or any other websites as well if you have any doubts in your mind. See your Vet since he or she can give you sound advice about your cat.

The brand you bought contains rice dextrin. It is used at a thickener/stabilizer, just like the tapioca starch.

Renew Life also contains 'extra ingredients', like maltodextrin, rice hulls, and rice extract blend.

What I am getting at is that most of the products will have extra ingredients, for thickening, stabilization, etc.

Most all of the s. boulardii products don't seem to need refrigerated, but I noticed many of them said that keeping them in the refrigerator will help extend the shelf life.

Clumping, to me, would suggest moisture has gotten into the capsules. You might contact the company and see what they say about it.

Thank you for your thoughts! 🙂 I'll probably just stick to the brand I have, given that most brands seem to add some kind of filler/thickener. I don't know how the capsules I bought could have come in contact with moisture, but, we did have some humid days here in IL, and, our A/C was out for one of those hot/humid days during the summer. Maybe that caused the clumping.

The Renew Life S Boulardii doesn't have any extra ingredients. It's just the S Boulardii and the capsule.

One more question: is there a recommended dosage for S boulardii that you all use? I've been opening the capsules of Nexabiotic and splitting the contents between my two cats, once a day.

I was not able to find Renew Life S Boulardii on Amazon. Do you have a link for what you buy? ... One more question: is there a recommended dosage for S boulardii that you all use? I've been opening the capsules of Nexabiotic and splitting the contents between my two cats, once a day.
I wonder if Jabzilla is in Canada, as I only came across the specific one they posted on a Canadian site.
Jarrow states the dosage is 1.25 bn CFU 2x a day. [1/4 of a 5 billion capsule twice a day]

I use Nexabiotic mostly because of ease of administration as the cat in question is notoriously suspicious of anything in his food. It does contain other ingredients and if those were to be a problem it should probably not be used. I have never had it clump, nor have I refrigerated it.

Jarrow is an exceptionally popular brand here on TCS.

So, the recommended dosage for a cat would be the same as for what is recommended for humans, 5 billion CFU a day?

I wonder if I got a batch without the packet which prevents caking/moisture build up? I really like and trust Jarrow, in my own personal use of their supplements. Generally, I think their ingredients are very good. I've had no issues with the Nexabiotic product, other than the clumping.

2.5 billion CFU a day, with it being 1.25 x 2. And, that is just for Jarrow. I honestly don't know what the human dosage is.

I generally take between 25 and 50 billion CFU per day of my probiotic. So, 2.5 billion for a human seems kind of low. But, I would not think that a cat's dosage would be anywhere near as much as what a human would use.

The cat dosage of Jarrow is 2.5 billion per day - so, that is only 5-10% of the dose you take for yourself. Maybe my math is screwed up, but I don't think so. [25 x 10% = 2.5, 50 x 5% = 2.5] As I said, I have no idea what dosage is appropriate for a human.

My boy has been on Jarrow's S. Boulardii since he had chronic diarrhoea around a year ago. he was given S. Boulardii during that time and after several doses and weeks, his diarrhoea subsided and I continued to give him on a twice daily basis, once in the morning and once in the evening to maintain his gut health.

The dose for the daily maintenance I gave my boy is I use the smallest disposable tea stirrer and give him one flat scoop each time.
I’m on the same probiotics as my boy.

This is the type of spoon I use

When my cats had soft stools or diarrhea, I used to give them 2.5 billions S. Boulardii twice a day for a week or so, then decreasing to once a day.
The brand(*) that I used comes in small sachets (powder), 5 billions per sachet, that I would split in two halves with a precision milligram scale, then I would dilute this power in about 5 ml of water (one 5 ml for each cat) and I would give them this mix straight in their mouth with a syringe at least 20 minutes before their meals.
I found that this method worked perfectly in my case.

(*)I can't suggest you the brand I use because I live in Italy and I strongly doubt that this brand is being sold abroad.
