My vet has put my cats on this formula.

Does anyone know why it is only by prescription? It is a long ride to this vet's office.

Do you all have another suggestion for food after we get Samuel's diarrhea problem figured out?

I don't know why it would be by prescription only (I'm a skeptic when it comes to "prescription" foods). Natural Balance makes a green pea and duck forumula also - no prescription required.

IT is RX only since it was designed to be a "allergy" formula and be the animal would be under the vets care.. Fortunately we do have some options OTC like NB which is very similiar ASK your VET if it would work ( oh and look it up and compare yourself ,..)

When it comes to allergies and GI issues, vets are really playing it by ear. It's trial and error. We carry a zillion GI foods for this reason. Four from Royal Canin, 6 varieties of Hills, and we just started stocking Eukanuba LR. The idea is to put your pet on something with a simple ingredient list (prefferably 1 meat + 1 carb), with the protein being a novel one. You can find plenty of foods that meet these criteria in a pet store near you.

We try one food for at least six weeks - eliminating all treats or extras - and take it from there.

And I LOVE doxies!

For what it's worth, my vet said that the Natural Balance allergy food was just as good as the prescription versions, with ingredients that are almost identical. She's an internal medicine veterinary specialist at the animal hospital, not just the regular vet.

I had a 13 year cat that had IBD
The reason is they want to limit the protein in the cats diet.
They try duck, rabbit, etc
The trick is to see if you can fix it with a protein that was never in the cats diet and then after they respond switch to another new protein.

You can get all these foods without a prescription.
Best I can tell is there is no magic answer.

Good Luck!

BTW if it's IBD they do some reseach on the net about it and a raw diet.

Thank you all.

I checked out the Natural Balance and as soon as my vet lets me, will try that one.

He really thinks the issue is stress related, but wants to rule out food allergies first.

He put both cats on Amitriptyline, too. We are only a couple days into that and I don't know how long it takes to make them mellow.

The diarrhea problem has carried on for over a year, when the second cat entered the home.
