TLDR: my cat has been ringworm free for 2 years, but no hair ever grew back in some of the spots. Anyone seen this before and want to put me at ease?

Hi all! Wondering if anyone has ever seen this before. I adopted my cat about 2.5 years ago and when I got him he has a pretty bad case of ringworm, probably 20+ little circular bald spots on his upper back and a few on his head/neck. I have no idea how long he had it for, but he had been in the shelter for a month, and it very likely could have started before he got there. Went through months of treatment (oral + topical, then lime sulfur to finish it off) and he was finally officially ringworm free. Luckily I never got it from him and didn’t have any other pets/people in the house with him.

In the ~2 years since, a lot of the spots have had some hair grow back, all white (he’s a black cat), but a few have zero or almost no regrowth. I did have a culture done a year ago that came back negative, but I feel perpetually a little bit stressed that it never fully went away or it came back or something. I’ve never seen any active scabbing on any of the bald spots, and neither I nor the roommate I have lived with for a while now have ever shown symptoms, but every other story of ringworm I’ve read about ends with the hair growing back in within a year.

Basically, I’m asking if anyone has ever seen ringworm damage the skin enough for there to never be any regrow.

Hi and welcome to TCS, despite what brought you here. Sorry no one has responded to your post yet - in time, I am sure you will see some responses from those who have dealt with ringworm. I have heard and read that ringworm, particularly when left untreated for a long time, can cause skin damage/scarring whereby the hair does not always grow back and/or may grow back white if depigmentation has occurred due the scarring. As far as I know, this is merely a cosmetic matter rather than a health issue.

I'll be curious to see when you do get responses, if you don't find some others who have had something similar happen with their cats!

Thanks for the response and the welcome! Definitely eager to hear if anyone has had a similar experience :)
I’ll post a picture of his spots when I’m home from work for anyone curious!

Pictures! He’s squirmy so not the best, but I tried

one of the spots that never grew in:

one that did:

And one of him looking more photogenic :) (the eyebrow white patch is also a former ringworm spot)

My cats had ringworm years ago, mostly on their ears.
One of them had very light hair on the ears, it never grew back completely. It never bothered him.
I think depends on the severity, it could damage the skin and hair follicles enough that it won't grow back.
