Good afternoon all.

We are fostering a trio of kittens who lost their mommy. They were about 4 - 5 weeks old. The one kitten went into fading kitten syndrome on the 3rd day with us. We immediately took her to the vet (as we thought that the right thing to do, but looking back not so much). They administered a subcutaneous bolus. It's worth noting that when we recieved her back from the vet a few minutes later, she was very wet on her back. Before we got her home, she became completely limp, eyes half open, not blinking, no sounds. We thought she has died. We noticed very slight breathing and decided to check what we could do. It was suggested online to try sugar solution on the gums strictly every 3 minutes. We did this from 10:30pm to 5:00am every 3 minutes exactly. Miraculously, she came to life at around 5:00am after about 6 and a half hours of repeating the sugar solution every 3 minutes. The next few days she seems to be recovering very nicely. We then noticed that she seems to be wet all the time on her back. We eventually noticed a "tear" in her skin on her back which we presumed was from the subcutaneous injection she received a few days earlier. We took her to a different vet who told us that the skin looked torn. And the liquid from the injection was seeping out. She disinfected and bandaged and prescribed some oral antibiotics. A few days later the bandage was removed and the gash was worse. It was cleaned again and rebandaged. Today back to the vet and it's even worse. It's not a huge gapping hole in the skin. As per the photo. We are desperate to know if anyone can advise us on what we can do to heal this. We have become so attached to her and we just want her to be well. Any thoughts on the cause or how we can fix it. Note that the current vet has recommended that we bandage it and continue with antibiotics and then perhaps leave it open with a cone if it still doesn't heal.

Thank you for any help.

Hi! Do you trust your current vet? If not perhaps contact another, but in the meantime I was wondering if pain medication been prescribed?

Oh my word! How awful. Someone tore her skin while giving the fluids and bacteria got in. This should not have happened. I’ve never seen this before from a sub-q injection. I also think she may have been given too much fluid.

It may need to be drained, and she certainly needs to stay on antibiotics, but the right ones for the type of bacteria causing this, which may now be a staph infection. Has the vet looked at the bacteria under a microscope? Which meds has she been given thus far?

It also looks like she may have some necrotic tissue there as well. Instead of bandaged this may need the open air to heal.

Do you trust your current vet? If not, see a different one who can stay on top of this. As asked above, has your cat received any pain meds?

Poor kitten. Thanks for your excellent care of her. Please keep us posted on this.

Hi there. To elaborate on the vet situation. The first vet we took her to was a 24hr emergency vet. They are the ones who administered the subcutaneous bolus. Because of the apparent leakage during the next few days, we then decided to take her to our usual vet, who is excellent with kittens and whom we use for all our TNR and Foster kittens when needed. It is this vet who recommended and administered the bandage and antibiotics.

Thank you for the reply. Yes, we are very frustrated with what's happened. And yes, we did suspect that the initial bolus injection was done very rough and subsequently tore her skin.

In terms of the antibiotics, the oral one that we are giving her 2 times a day seems be called "amoxyclav 5ml"? In terms of medication, the only other meds she was given was a job of vitamins on the night she went into KFS and got the bolus as well. Other than that it's just the antibiotics as of 3 days ago.

The vet we took her to after the FKS episode and who administered the bolus, is a 24hr emergency vet. As we were not happy with how it was all done we have subsequently switched to our usual vet whom we use for all our TNR and Foster kittens. They are the ones who suggested the bandaging and prescribed the antibiotics. Today they suggested that if there is no improvement by Monday, they may leave the wound open with the a cone and isolation.

Just to update all on her current condition. She really is an amazing kitten. Form the time she came out of FKS, she has been fighting so hard. She has been eating very well, drinking water and pooping all normally. She plays with the other 2 kittens very well, and even gives them a good run around during the day when she is not resting. But it's clear she is not 100%. She often starts to look very tired and will sometimes just lie down and watch her surroundings for quite a while. Her eyes are still glossy which we've always worried about since the first day we got her. But, we are so worried that this "tear" and infection will get into her blood and send her crashing once again.

Thank you for all the replies so far. Please keep the comments and suggestions coming. We are desperate to save this beautiful kitten.

Her little self is in a bit of a warzone.

As commented above, this is due in no small part to your fantastic care of her.

This might give you more information that you can speak about to the vet in addition to the other items mentioned above.

An update on Glossy...

Our little kitty has made an amazing recovery. After about 15 trips to the vet to get her bandages changed and treated, the wound finally healed. She certainly was a little fighter. I say "was", as with heavy hearts, we had managed to find a wonderful home for her and her sister Squeak and said goodbye to her last week. We had become very very attached to her, but that is the downside of fostering; you fall in love with the kitties and then have to say goodbye. But we are so happy to see her run around and enjoy playing with her sister. She has a wonderful personality! We miss her a lot!!
