A Time When....

Decisions were made by going "eeny-meeny-miney-mo"
Mistakes were corrected by simply exlaiming "do over!"
"Race issue" meant arguing about who ran the fastest
Catching the fireflies could happily occupy an entire evening
It wasn't odd to have two or three "best" friends
The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was "cooties"
Having a weapon in school meant being caught with a slingshot
A foot of snow was a dream come true.
Saturday morning cartoons weren't 30-minute ads for action figures.
"Oly-oly-oxen-free" made perfect sense
Spinning around, getting dizzy, and falling down was cause for giggles.
The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team.
War was a card game
Water balloons were the ultimate weapon.
Baseball cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle.
Taking drugs meant orange-flavored chewable aspirin.

If you can remember most or all of these, then you have lived!!!

You could hear the ice cream man down the street and the music did not annoy you, yet you thought your mom was just trying to spoil your fun when she told you, "I can get a whole box of those from the store!":icecream: :icecream: :icecream:

Thank You, Michele. After reading Debby's news I needed to remember the good ole',"simple" things. Thanks, again, for the smiles. . . .

Isn't it nice to be brought back to simpler times. I remember the bells of the ice cream truck! They are a great part of my childhood memories!

Michele,

Boy do those bring back memories.

Anyone remember a game called "I See Girlie"?? How about Chinese fortune tellers made of paper??

Back then my mom would give me 50 cents for the movies which would get me in, plus buy me popcorn and candy. Before the movies started, i'd see cartoons instead of previews of other movies.

Wow!!! I love this thread!!! Donna I think I remember the chinese fortune tellers made of paper you are talking about...tell me if this is the same.....

We used to make these things, God only knows how, out of paper, that you fit on your fingers, and they opened and closed, and on the outside they had numbers written, so you picked a number...then after the person holding the paper did a bit of mumbo jumbo shuffling around...it landed on a fortune....they lifted the flap on it and read you your fortune!!! Is this what you are thinking of Donna!!! Or does everyone think I am crazy?

Does anyone remember the game red light/green light?
I was only 7 or 8 when I played this at recess...but I remember it had something to do with having one person in charge, and if they said green light, you could go forward, and as soon as they said red light....which they always said very fast...you had to stop...and anyone who was still moving, was out of the game...and the first person to reach the person in charge, was the winner, and he would become the next person in charge.

Dumb, I know....but we loved it!

And since we are on the subject...( I love this trip down memory lane...) does anyone at all remember this....

It was a hand game we played, one of those clap your hands twice, then clap the other guys hand kind of thing....I hope someone remembers these kind of games so I dont look like a TOTAL moron, here!

Remember this one.....ANYONE????

Miss Betsy had a baby...
she named her sister sue....
she put her in the bathtub
just to see what she would do...
she.....

I want to leave this blank so that on the off chance anyone else remember it...they can continue it for a ways, then I will continue it...(it's a long one...
)

Hope ya all don't think I'm nuts!!!

After getting that ice cream from the ice cream man, do you remember catching fireflies on a warm summer evening?

I'm sorry for bringing this up, but. . . .

"Ringed around with rosies,
Pockets full of posies.

"Ashes, ashes,
We all fall down."

That cheery little ditty, which I remember from my childhood, has (as I recently learned) its origin in the Black Plague days of the Middle Ages. One fairly common belief during that time involved flowers: One could ward off the fatal malady by surrounding oneself and one's home with flowers. Even then, little kids saw through a seriously-taken protocol and turned it into a "nursery rhyme."

I seem to be as old as everyone else here!!!

Remember as kids when we could run around the whole neibourhood playing tag etc. and no adult had to be watching out for suspicious strangers!!

What a lovely time of innocence!

Debby, I do remember the hand clapping games also. I just can't remember the song we sang when we did them!! Guess I am too old!

Wait.... wasn't one of them something like this....

Who stole the cookies from the cookie jar?

How about a nickel pack of gum?
A penny candy?
You put a penny in the machine and got a gumball. Now it's a dime or quarter depending on the size.

How about a game called "Beaver"? My brother and I used to play it on road trips. Everytime you saw a station wagon, you yelled out "Beaver". The one with the most at the end of the trip wins.

Or...we'd watch a tv show and pretend that we were one of the characters.

Hey Debby, your are right on the chinese paper fortune teller.

There was a custom of shouting "perdiddle" (sp?) when seeing a motor vehicle with a burned-out headlight. Do any of you recall what was supposed to happen next?

I remember all the things Debby named, although I dont remember the rest of that ditty

Perdiddle I carried on to my son, along with Slug Bug...when you see a VW Bug and hit whoever is in the car, yelling SLUGBUG!..

I dont know the game "I see Girlie"..but we always played "Mother May I?".

Wait a sec...is that song the one where every line ended up with a word that sounded dirty, but carried on to the next line and wasnt?
Like (blah blah blah) "kick you in the Ass...me no more questions, I'll tell you no more lies"...or something like that?
My mom used to give us the meanest looks when we sang that song!
(so we'd sing it again!)

Holding your breath when crossing a bridge.
Lifting your feet when going over railroad tracks.
Bazooka bubble gum cartoons.
Fake tattoos in Cracker Jacks...we thought that was the best prize...Mom hated 'em!

the steamboat had a bell,
Mary went to heaven, the steamboat went to ...

Hello operator,

and if you don't get it,
I'll kick you in the ...

Behind the iron cutain,
there was a piece of glass'
and when Mary slipped,
and fell on it,
she hurt her little...

Ask me no more questions,
I'll tell you no more lies

believe it or not, I can't remember the last line!!

Dark dark dark!

I was going to post this whole thing a few days ago, but didn't!

Deb:

Thank you! It was driving me crazy. You know when you get a song on your mind you just can't get it out, well that's what that stupid song was doing to me!
