Hi everyone, I'm new here and hoping to get recommendations on a specific type of canned food.

I have a cerebellar hypoplasia cat, he's an orange cutie named Filbert, he is moderate/severe in wobbliness, and requires assistance with eating. We have a great feeding routine that he looks forward to at every meal. My question regards his canned food. I had previously been feeding him Natural Balance canned Venison and Pea...but it has been discontinued. I fed this food strictly due to the stickiness, thickness, and density of the food. It is super thick and dense (so dense that I use a second spoon, dipped in hot water, to scrape the food off the first spoon), and this thick texture allows him to pickup mouthfuls easily since he has some difficulty lapping up thin, soupy, or soft/mousse/airy pates. I am able to add in a scoop of Orijen kibble and it all mixes together into a nice thick paste that he can easily eat. I have also used Merrick Purrfect Bistro canned Indoor Cat since it had a similar dense texture...until it was discontinued as well. I was hoping someone has tried similarly thick textured canned food and could give me a recommendation. I prefer premium brands (no Friskies, Fancy Feast, or 9 Lives please), and my cat does not have any dietary restrictions so he can eat any protein.

Can I use any canned food out there?...yes, but I'm trying to make life for a cat that was born handicapped a little bit easier.

Thanks all! :)

Hi and welcome to TCS. I have used Merrick Purrfect Bistro pates - although not specifically one that had the label of 'Indoor', as well as a few of the Limited Ingredient ones. That texture seemed to be pretty similar to some of the Orijen and Arcana pates too - although Orijen seems to like to add a tiny layer of shredded food on top, which I usually scooped away for Feeby. Aside from those, she ate Fancy Feast classic pates, which were fairly dense. Personally speaking, I don't consider them to be the same as Friskies or 9 Lives. They one of the few that don't contain legumes, veggies, grains or fruits - all of which I don't think are necessary in cat food. They also only had one gum (guar) in them.

However, I do suspect the Natural Balance might have been denser due to the amount of pea contents in it, as they act as a binder. So, you might look for other canned pates with a lot of peas.

If adding Orijen kibble has helped with the foods you've used before, it might just do the trick with any of the pates out there that you do like enough to try.

Welcome to TCS K KittyMittens !

Some flavors of Hound & Gatos canned cat food are more dense and thicker than the other flavors. Specifically the Beef but the Lamb & Liver is not as dense but kind of sticky. See if you can find single cans locally to see if they work for you.

You could try RAWZ-- it is expensive, but seems to be thick. At least the rabbit is..

I like the stickiness of the Wureva lamb, but I wouldn't say it is dense...
The Hound and Gatos we tried was both but I had a heck of a time getting my 3 to eat it.
