Did you say you were also using clay? I know the article says non clumping is ok, but if they're eating it I personally don't think it matters whether it's clumping or not.

Maybe try sand .

I have non-clumping clay, scented paper pellets, and pine pellets available right now. No sand unfortunately.
I'd need to get that from a specialty shop where I live, and I'm not able to go to town for a few days.

They're not so much eating it as putting it in their mouths and playing with them. I worry that they MIGHT eat them, but haven't seen any swallowed yet. I decided to try the pine pellets first as they smell the least food-like imo. They don't seem to like the texture under their feet though. They just want to fish them out of the box to play with.
