One month ago this evening our Persian had to be taken to our emergency vet with symptoms of Cystitis in and out of litter trays and in pain our emergency vet examined her and took her temperature which was normal so she said she didnt think she had an infection nut she gave her a painkilling injection and a small amount of Gabapentin to take home to use
Problems continued and we went to our vets one of the vets tested a urine sample we had taken overnight he checked it and more or less said the same thing he said she did have a few crystals but nothing to worry about
Problems continued and at last I was able to see our favourite vet who checked the urine specimen and noticed blood in it so it was sent to the laboratory
About a week later the results came back and she has an E coli infection and also Struvite crystals in her bladder so she was put on Penicillin tablets which did nothing so we went back she was then given an injection of Baytril and some Baytril to give her in a syringe this was last Monday she is still in and out of the litter tray so I phoned the vets and our favourite vet could not see her as she was operating today but she wanted someone to see her
Anyway the vet checked her and she was still in discomfort he looked at her notes and said she has quite a lot of crystals in her bladder he asked if she was still urinating ok we said she was in and out the tray just passing a little he told us how they can get blocked and how it is much more serious in a male cat I said I had had a couple of female cats who had it in the 1980s
Anyway he knows Gem will only eat raw food she was brought up on it and she will never eat anything else he said its the raw food causing her problems she really needs to be on a Urinary prescription diet food there is a lot of calcium in raw cat food and also a lot of protein too all of which encourage Struvite crystals and she would have got the infection from the raw food too
He said to continue with the Baytril and Cystaise and Gabapentin to help the lining of her bladder he also wanted to give her a few days of Loxicom he knew I am pretty much against Loxicom ( Metacam ) so he offered to take blood and check her kidneys first and phone me with the results later on which he did and her blood test was very good so she has had some of it also he gave some Vitamin C tablets as it will dissolve the Crystals fingers crossed !
Its been very stressful watching her spend so much time in and out of the litter tray and we have two more of our Persians who have been having treatment for different things they are insured the renewal date is next October goodness knows what the monthly cost will be then !

Bacteria can cause dehydration, so if your cat tested positive for E Coli, I would assume that could be the culprit. Dehydration can contribute heavily to UTI's as well. What kind of raw food is she eating? Is it dry? I've been feeding raw (frozen, re-hydrated freeze dried, homemade) for years but am now in the process of switching my cats to a canned diet, and hopefully eventually a fresh cooked diet. I truly believe raw is the healthiest thing for them generally, but I'm not playing around with this bird flu going on.

It IS true that commercial raw seems to be pretty high in calcium, but I have never heard that high protein will cause crystals. Cats are obligate carnivores, therefore require protein.

;)If you make your own raw food, then you can control the amount and type of calcium you put in the food. When I fed raw and one of mine was diagnosed with kidney disease, I changed from using bone to using a different form of calcium just to cut down on the amount of phosphorus she was getting, so I know you can make adjustments. As an aside, did they run a culture on her urine to determine exactly which antibiotic to fight it with? I'm guessing so since they found E-Coli, but thought I'd make sure. Also, I've know of cats who got UTI's from E-Coli who did NOT eat raw, so I don't buy the fact that it has to be from eating raw. I think your Vet just isn't liking the fact that you feed raw, which many Vets are against.

As far as the bird flu, this is definately a worry at the moment! I worry about it now just with freeze dried poultry.

I'm not actually sure if you have a question here, or if you are just letting us know that feeding raw could result in crystals. Please advise if you need some answers

The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio in diet is very important. The ideal ratio is 1.1:1
I hope your vet did an ultrasound.
FYI - Baytril (enrofloxacine) is known to cause blindness in cats at high and prolonged dosage.
