So, I was told by a vet that a cats heart requires grain because without it, their hearts slowly begin to swell over time and incur heart damage. Is there any truth to this? If so, will adding grain to raw cat food to prevent this from happening? If so, how much grain and what kinds?

No, the whole grain causes heart issue concern only affects dogs (and certain dog breeds more than others) not cats. TCS has threads that include links to articles, published data, about this.

Cats do not need grains in their diet. Grains are indigestible to cats and will just come out as stinky poop. You can ignore the vet's advice. Some vets push myths like this for because they're not well educated on the topic.
