Good morning and Happy Whiskers Wednesday! :coolcat: I had a discussion with a friend I was meeting last week about GPS. The younger generation uses an app to go everywhere. Maybe because I grew up with actual maps or because I knew my way around the city I never got lost. If I’m going somewhere out of my comfort zone I tend to rely on the Apple GPS app when driving. I know there are other apps too, e.g. Google, Waze, Mapquest, Here We Go, etc.

WHAT GPS APP DO YOU USE?

I generally use a stand alone GPS device, a Garmin, with a 6" display. I mount it on the windscreen with its suction cup when I need it, then I remove it to prevent thefts.
On rare occasions I use Google Maps from my phone.

I use WAZE. It seems to be more up to date with regards to traffic delays. Drivers also post traffic, heavy traffic, construction, police presence, road hazards, etc. Kind of like a real time view of traffic. Gives fastest route, reroutes you if there are delays. I asked a lot of Uber drivers and many of them use this app.

Google maps. My new car connects to my phone with Apple CarPlay wirelessly; so its right there on the car screen with little effort. It uses the car speakers to give the directions and automatically lowers the music to do that. The only thing I don’t like is having to glance down to see the screen; but the screen is MUCH larger than a standard gps or phone screen. So that makes up for it.

The car has a built in gps app too; but I have everything saved in Google maps and generally like it better. I think its Tomtom built in.

I didn’t think much about the changes in technology when we got our new car this summer; but I’m definitely appreciative! :agree: AppleMusic through my phone is also an unexpected bonus. My kids are being regularly subjected to my personal playlists. Lotsa 90s to early 2000s music in various styles but the occasional real oldie and modern stuff too. DD just puts her earbuds in.

I don't use any, because I know the area well enough that I don't need one. Even if I miss a turn, I know that if I go in x direction for y miles, I will hit z road, which will take me where I want to go. For anything else, I use old-school paper maps. I know of too many people who have been led astray by GPS to fully trust it.

Google Maps. I always found the Thomas Guide hard to use because sometimes it had to be turned upside down depending on where you were heading. If I am going someplace unfamiliar, I will check the route first.

Several years ago a friend and I were trying to get to a community just outside Los Angeles called La Canada. It is generally Spanish for "the canyon" and there is supposed to be the little mark above the "n". Siri promptly gave us the directions to British Columbia.

I don't use anything. I rode with someone once who had an app on her cell phone. She put in where she was going and it talked her through getting there. I don't know what it was though. I am old school. I look it up on GMaps or MapQuest and write down the directions.

Only Google Maps and not while I'm driving. I prefer to have all my attention on the road, and since I'm not good at distances, being told "turn in 100 metres" would be confusing. I look up the route before I leave and try to remember whatever roads I need - like "don't use the far left lane because you'll end up diverted to Mercer St and take forever to get back again".

Mind you Google Maps is ridiculously inaccurate. They had a nursing home near me listed in the wrong road and misspelled the name! They also said to turn left into the Bunnings car park and do a right hand turn from there back onto the road instead of simply turning right at the intersection to get to the shelter where I adopted Daisy. 🙄

I use whatever app is on my phone, but like a few others, I always write the directions down on pen and paper. I went to a dog show a few years ago, and when I went to leave and hit "go home", it stalled for what seemed like forever and just said "can't find a way there." How helpful. :rolleyes3:

No smart phone for any kind of app and if I really need to know how to get someplace,I'll find a map or call for directions.

Interesting that a large majority of Uber drivers use Waze. Is this why you chose to use it?
