What's something you learned "embarrassingly late" in life?







I was about 15-16 years old when I learned that boys can, in fact, pee sitting down on the toilet. I genuinely thought it was an exclusively standing action with said gender in retrospect it is pretty obvious it can be done. Thank you to my good guy friends who led me into the light.

I'm sure I have waaayyy better examples (Especially at a later age) but first that popped into my memory!

Dunno if learning that hubcaps are cheap plastic that just gets banged onto the wheel with a hammer counts. I only learned to drive three years ago and was blissfully ignorant of anything about cars until then. It wasn’t a skill I needed.

Hmm… I’m not sure. I still can’t drive a stick shift but that’s more about coordination than knowledge.

It did take me forever to learn to cut a steak. My mom and stepdad used to say I better never order steak on a date because he’d have to cut it for me. In my own defense; steaks I cook are much more tender.

If I come up with a better one I’ll add it later.

When I first learned about the underground railroad when I was around 6, I thought it was an actual train!

I was SO embarrassed to learn the true name of a backside! I was in early school I remember, and called it what we all did at home, a popo. (bottom or behind in German) all my grandparents were German speaking immigrants and that is where it came from. I remember EVERYONE laughing at me and can still feel the embarrassment! I truly didn't know it was called anything else. Hey at least I could understand a little German!

Do some guys pee sitting down? I've never seen it, besides the little 2 year old that I was helping potty train when I was babysitting.

Yeah, but that might be based on an accent? Some people say Douba Yuh.

I'm learning so many things late in life, like how to sort the trash. One major thing I learned was that I should have gone to college!!!

Of course they do, especially when they get older and their stream isnt very good. Or when they are tired, or at night and cant see. Be glad they do then.

We use a lot of little nicknames and made up words in my family. My entire life, we used the word poogie (said with a hard G sound), when referring to lint on clothes or whatever. It wasn't until I was in high school, when I stopped my friend and said "hey, hang on you have a poogie on your back.." and I pulled it off, that she turned and looked really confused and a little scared of what on earth I was pulling off her back. She was like "A what!?!"...I replied "A poogie"...very nonchalantly. That then lead to her freaking out about what a poogie was until I shower her what I pulled off her back and then laughing at me about what I called lint. I knew the word "lint", but we used that in reference to what was pulled out of the dryer, but random stuff (lint, thread, fuzz etc...) stuck on clothes or other fabric were poogies! Did NOT know that wasn't a real word.....until HIGHSCHOOL!

I know there are a lot of things that I didn't learn about until I was an adult, but I'm blanking on most of them. I'd say one that is actually sticking out is why the cat we had when I was a kid was named Casey. I remember wanting to name her Kissy (I was 5) and my dad refused to have a cat named that so apparently they settled on Casey.

Another one was that I asked on Facebook how do people "do crack." I've never done drugs of any kind, so I had no idea how crack specifically works. I had a friend think it was hilarious that I had no clue.

Nobody in my family swore, so I was an adult before I heard four-letter words and figured out what they meant. I had to ask my husband about a couple of them.

I didn't realise dwarves were real until I was about 12 or so. I thought they were like pixies or unicorns or something that only existed in fairy tales. I was shocked when I discovered that there are people born with dwarfism who live in the real world.

I didn't know that peanuts grow underground or that pineapples grow on little bushes. I thought they grew on trees like most other nuts and fruit did.

And recently I found out that if a piece of clothing has hand wash only on the label you don't actually have to wash it by hand. There's a setting on the washing machine for hand wash clothes.
