Yes, and I used to love to swim. Our pool goes from 4 to 8 feet, not really very big, but on a hot, stifling summer day, it gets the job done. I used to come home from second shift at work at 11, hit the bathroom and change into my suit. And be in the pool until around 1 or 2 in the morning, just lounging. Sometimes by myself (because Rick had to work the next day) or sometimes with our son. I can float, too. I just put my arms behind my head, cross my legs and just...float. Makes Rick crazy because he sinks like a rock
Yes I can swim but I never took swimming lessons. With all the lakes surrounding where we grew up, swimming is just something we all did and learned from day one. We had a local "watering hole", we called it "the pit", that was closest to us that we went to all the time. And after my parents divorce, both my Dad and Mom ended up in waterfront properties, so I lived on a lake since I was 9 years old. We went camping all the time, I was in Girl Guides (Canadian version of scouts) and was also a camp counselor as a teen for a time, so it was kinda a requirement. I used to love swimming, however, now that I'm older, and after developing Raynaud's (a circulation syndrome) I don't enjoy it because I get cold way too fast.
My mother was terrified of drowning, so she made suer all of us kids had swimming lessons. I made it to lifeguard status but really never enjoyed swimming. I haven't been in the water for probably 40 years, even though we lived on a lake. I had to clean up some dead fish that were almost as long as me, reinforced my nondesire to swim!
before my stroke i could swim really good now i just float and go in circles .
think of a fly or bee in a pool buzzing round an round in circles and that would be me now
No I don't. I took swimming lessons at the local YWCA as a child and had the same experience as catloverfromwayback
.
As an adult, I went 'swimming' in a friend's pond and once my feet were no longer on the bottom, I started flailing around and going under, swallowing water and they had to pull me out once they realized I wasn't kidding around. Just terrifying for me.
Yes! I love being in the water. Im not in the shape I used to be; but I still enjoy it. Swimming is probably one exercise I could make myself do often without difficulty convincing myself to do it. If the local Y was closer and a little more affordable I would join! Or if we get rich I’ll get an endless pool at home.
My kids did lessons at the Y when they were younger. DD turned out to be a pretty good swimmer; even though she looked like she was winding herself up big time just to take a little tiny jump in at first. DS just caught on better in the last few years. I told them learning to swim is for safety; not just because you like it. Both kayak with DH and though we are 100% diligent on wearing life jackets; you still need water safety knowledge.
I had a bad experience in swimming lessons that traumatized me. My regular instructor was out and the one who filled in for her grabbed me before I had a chance to even take a breath and jumped in the water with me. After being held underwater, I was more afraid than ever. My mom got mad and I didn't go to swimming lessons anymore.
I don't believe I was meant to swim, anyway. My regular instructor would throw quarters in the pool to encourage us to dive in and get them. The other kids would jump right in after them. I used to think, "I don't need a quarter that bad."
Yes. It was mandatory for us growing up. We had to be able to swim a certain distance well ( and consistently) before we were allow to not always be wearing a life jacket all day. I always loved water but was respectful of it. Don't get the opportunity to swim much these days unfortunately.
Most definitely. My Mom was a very strong swimmer and she saw to it that both of us girls took lessons and did well at them.I have to say though that I've not done much of it since moving out here.We are surrounded by beautiful lakes, but I get the creepies when something brushes up against my leg and I can't see what it might be!Harry, on the other hand ,cannot swim at all,try as I might over the years to teach him even the basics. He says fish are meant to swim, not him.
I absolutely LOVE swimming and just being in the water. It's great! We've been contemplating digging a pond because it's such great low impact exercise and I can picture the cats lounging around and laughing at the idiot humans that play in water like it's fun or something.
