Appliances that last. They didn't have a lot of bells and whistles but they lasted. I don't think they cost any more when you take into account inflation. My old clothes dryer gave up the ghost a few years ago and it was well over 20 years old. When I went to Lowe's to get another one the salesperson was an older gentleman and he said you know this one won't last that long and I said I know.
I know--I have replaced almost everything in my house now, as far as the majors (roof, dishwasher, hot water heater, furnace/air conditioner, dryer, washing machine)--yet to be replaced are the stove and fridge which are both a little over 20 years old (Mom and I can't remember exactly when my grandparents bought them). The furnace, when it was replaced (about a year ago in May, after limping on a repair through the remainder of the winter ... they had to weld a bracket together because no one made the bracket that held the blower motor in place any more), the guy said that it was from 1990 (so over 30 years), but the modern ones will probably only go for about half as long.

The lovely little boutiques, grocers and other privately owned shops ... not part of a huge multinational.
And underwear! I just find knickers or a bra that fits beautifully and they' gone. :(
