I believe I've asked this question or a similar one before; but we have new members so I'll ask again anyway!

I was thinking about my name last night on a longer drive in the car. I seem to go back and forth between whether or not I like my name. Right now it's a not-so-much; although it's pretty written in cursive. I don't know that it fits me or my heritage at all. I never met another person with my name living where I did as a child. A few friends in high school started calling me by a shortened version and that stuck through college; but then it felt weird using a nickname at work so I've mostly used my full name. My nieces and nephews on DH's side use the shortened version and I'm fine with that. Adding Aunt before my name makes it a bigger mouthful. Professional situations feel more full-name appropriate.

My stepsister hates her name. There was a character n a popular cartoon with the same name when she was in elementary school and people commented all the time. My stepdad had given her a nickname as a baby that was somewhat related to her name and she has preferred that her entire life. People always do a double take when I say what her name is but I'm not joking; it's her preference. I used to get annoyed when people would associate my name with celebrities and things too; so I get it! Plus her career isn't one where it would matter as much. I mean she's not an attorney or medical professional. It might be ok for a pediatrician or something but not a neurosurgeon.

I do NOT like the shortened version of DH's name so he gets a full name from me even though some people call him the short version. It's too associated with a guy I went to high school with who was....um.....without much moral character. So I tell him wives and mothers get some naming privileges with what version they use. ;) It's not like he was introduced as the shortened version anyway. And half the time in private I call him by a nickname I won't be sharing here anyway.

My kids get their full names but neither have long names. Both have multiple nicknames; but don't get called them in public.

Do you go by your name or a nickname? Do you like your name? (You don't have to share your name if you don't want to. :))

I like my name (first and middle) because I was named after my grandparents. Both are fairly uncommon too, when I was in school people would have trouble pronouncing my first name even though it's not that weird. But, my first name has grown in popularity and it's kind of weird to meet people with the same name, lol. One of my coaches growing up actually named her daughter the same name after liking mine, which is also strange but flattering I guess.

I don't usually go by a nickname, but sometimes I do. I'm not picky either way.

My name is Susan but growing up, even as an adult, to family I am Susie. I didn’t care for Susie in high school, so everyone who knows me from there calls me Sue. But since I have been an adult and in my business career I have gone by Susan, which fits me and my personality much better than the other two.

Lari is my nickname and what most people call me. Official name is Laura, but I haven't gone by it really since before high school. I don't mind it at the doctor or for official paperwork, but for people I see often, I prefer Lari.

I usually call my husband by his full name rather than a nickname because he has no strong preference. Our kids have names that lend themselves to various nicknames, which I use occasionally, but tend to use the whole thing or other terms of endearment (for some reason, they both get "bubba"). If they choose to go by a nickname when they get older, I'll definitely honor and use it because I remember how hard it was when my parents didn't want to use my chosen nickname because that's not what they named me.

I disliked all my names until I changed them by deed poll in my twenties. I changed my surname to my mother's maiden name, because our family history has been traced back to the 16th century in Germany and that means something. My original surname meant nothing - it was my useless father's adopted name. I changed my given name to Louise, a name that meant something to me. I was teased for my first name in school, which didn't help endear it to me. I still have to spell it - it's not all that common among my age group, I've only met two other women with it, and there are a lot of people around who can't grasp that Louis and Louise are not pronounced or spelled the same (the S in Louis is silent in French, it's not Lewis). I never use a shortened version of it and dislike other people doing so; it's uninvited and unwelcome familiarity. I paid good money for all six of those letters!

I did not like my name when I was younger because it was not that common and more of a grown up name. People often misspell it too. To be honest, I still don't like it but as the saying goes, "what's in a name?" :dunno: I
I have family members that STILL misspell my name. If they haven’t gotten it in the last +40 years; there’s no hope. :flail:

People used to switch my first and last name too. I am my father’s only child; so its a little sad the last name won’t be carried on, but I was still SO glad to take DHs last name thats hard to mess up!

I have never liked my first or middle name and use a nickname almost all of the time. The names were from my grandmothers, so no creativity there; one died years before I was born and the other one I only met a couple of times and was somewhere between dislike/completely neutral about her.

I have sublimated this into pet names and almost neurotically make sure that I give them the most beautiful names like Fiona. Fiona's full name was Fiona Sienna; they all get middle names as well.

My name is Alyssa and I don't hate my name and I don't love it. It doesn't feel like a very adult name though. I don't go by any nickname, but some of my family members call me Lys (mainly one of my aunts and my parents) and I'm Auntie Lyssa to my nieces. Since I'm planning on having a baby in the next year (hopefully), of course I have been thinking about names. If I have a girl she will be named Evangeline even though I plan on calling her Evie. I figure it's good to have a name that has a few nickname options and also has a formal name option. Boy names I don't have anything in mind, so I'm hoping for a girl.

My aunt does this with her pets. She never had children or even married so I just thought that might be why. I would never ask though. One cat ended up with my mom and stepdad because of a landlord and she’s officially Olivia Elizabeth and liked to be tucked in bed as a kitten. So I might be right. :hearthrob: I call her Her Majesty Queen Olivia the First lately because shes both regal and demanding in her old age.

This was after demanding the tv be put on for her. She steals my moms phone too.

One of my best friends from high school through college and our 20s is Alyssa but she goes by Aly. I think she had similar feelings about her name. She also thought the spelling should be different for her pronunciation. She is ah-lees-a; not ah-liss-a. I think her mother is the only one who uses her full name. I’m pretty sure I remember her stepdad even calling her Aly.

Evangeline “Evie” was a character in a book I read a few years ago and I really like that name because of it. Very elegant! I have a few girls names that were on my list and one I’m sad to not use. I only had like 3 boy names that I liked when I had DS. My favorite is our oldest nephews name. The next favorite was chosen by a friend for their son they lost to a late miscarriage (we were pregnant at the same time) so I’d never use that. His name does fit him perfectly though. It doesn’t feel like a disappointment because it was my 3rd choice.

I go by my nickname, first 3 letters of my long name. Yes, I like it. Everybody put a Y at the end when I was a kid, but not much anymore.

My name is normal for the 1980s, but my mom spelled it differently, so nobody ever spells it right. A coworker once told me "I didn't misspell your name; your mom misspelled your name!", lol.

It's fine. I don't identify with the name strongly but I don't dislike it.
